Burgos Cathedral (in Spanish - Catedral de Burgos), also known as Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos, is a Gothic cathedral located in Burgos, in northern Spain. This religious building is famous for being a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture, and it's well-known for its vast dimensions and rich and unique history. In 1984, the cathedral was added to the list of World Heritage Sites, by UNESCO.

Burgos Cathedral is known as the "Crown Jewel" of the Castile Kingdom. Burgos was the capital of castile kingdom which later became a part of the kingdom of Spain.

Construction of Burgos Cathedral began in the year 1221, by orders of the king of Spain. Architects from various countries were involved in its construction. It was built on land that had been previously occupied by an older cathedral of earlier medieval Romanesque style. By the year 1238, much of the structure had been completed. After that, the pace of construction slowed down significantly. Between the late 13th century and the early 14th century, a new cloister was built, and the chapels on the aisles were added to the complex. The official consecration of the temple was made in 1260, but work continued; construction ended around 1567.

Burgos Cathedral was often referred to as the work of angels. Bishop Don Mauricio was deeply impressed by many Gothic cathedrals when he traveled to France. On his return he felt that a magnificent Gothic church should also be built in Burgos. The Cathedral was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Behind the main altar stretches a long cloister that houses over a dozen chapels.

The most splendid and bewitching chapel of all is Chapel of Condestable. It is dedicated to Condestable Pedro Fernandez de Velasco. Velasco is regarded as a hero here as he contributed to the liberation of Granada from Muslim occupation in 1492.

Many skilled artists and craftsmen, contributed to the construction of this wonderful Cathedral over a period of three hundred year. It is indeed considered as the masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture.
