Carbon isn't necessarily a language to replace C++; it's a language to make _some_ aspects of C++ "easier" to handle like templates and types. Having such a big language as the crutch for the compiler that is SUPPOSED to replace the big language hurts big time.

Odin and eventually Jai are languages fit to solve real problems, but I'm not sure about the "real problem" Carbon is supposed to solve beyond gluing weird C++ code with something that's "passable" in language design.

You are not giving enough space to one of the most important features of Carbon, it can include C++ code/libs into your new Carbon projects, that is why it could be a successor. This is all about migration of old code, libraries, technologies, platforms into the new language.

The backward compatibility feature is the real deal and it would depend upon the evolution of syntax, code clarity and modern features available. Time will tell.

Google tends to prototype many things to see what people do with them, and some just fall to the trash bin eventually, others succeed.
