Progressive for me, means it is always entertaining. The scene changes. The music keeps me engaged. In constant thought of the next scene. It does not matter if it builds up from soft first and then gets hard. That is not "progress" - that is called "Build UP" Any song or band can have it. And to tell you quite honestly. If every Prog Rock song had a formula like "it has to start soft first and then build up to loud" I would get just as bored with it as i am with any other formulaic rock.

So my approximate life-time in listening to progressive rock and metal doesn't conclude the fact that I know that just because a song kicks off heavily, it won't be a progressive song at all? I think you've only listened to Yes, Rush and such prog bands. Check up 90's -> modern progressive music, and come back when you feel that you can alter your statement.
