The language on Phil's tweet is vague enough that it could be interpreted a number of ways, but maybe the door is open to COD continuing to release on PlayStation. But more important to me is the possibility of COD ending its annualized release that sees devs burn out and new releases get rushed out to launch in a broken and unfinished state.

The fact that literally the first things the devs ask is to stop annual releases tells you a lot about the AAA gaming industry these days.

Releasing the devs from the torture of making a CoD for each new year, is a bless. Just devs, working back on the games that they wanted to like Banjo, Crash and even old games is just awesome.

Taking CoD off of annual release would probably be a god send to the series as a whole. The one thing it has consistently suffered from is game abandonment year after year. Not to mention the fact that older releases are kept at full price to further push players into always buying the newest.

If that’s how it ends up being, my appreciation for Phil’s work only grows. He seems to genuinely care, and if he doesn’t then he’s at least realized that he might not be sucking maximum bucks out in the short term but he’s definitely seeing a massive and consistent profit long term, plus he has one of the best reputations of a big CEO in the entire industry while he’s doing it.

Imagine a call of duty with an amazing, in-depth campaign that has extra modes and top-notch multiplayer maps? Yeah I remember MW1, MW2 and Black Ops 1.

I just hope this means cod will finally be given some time and love which hopefully will mean a game that’s halfway decent

This is best course of action Microsoft could done, release all COD games on Game Pass, release a new COD every few years and use COD Mobile and Warzone to fill the gap and retain player attention

I think that Phil is probably the CEO with most common sense out of all, he genuinely care about gaming and obviously money but at least he knows that a polished game can make more money than a rushed one

Spencer seems to understand better than any gaming CEO ever how to walk the thin line between actually giving costumers what they ask for and making a shit ton of money for the shareholders.

Honestly I’m all for taking CoD off an annual release schedule. It’s the main reason I’ve gotten so bored of it and basically every Ubisoft franchise over this past decade.

It’s really hard to keep things fresh when they devs are constantly forced to go back to square one and clearly don’t have enough time to actually finish the game to meet the annual deadlines for these games.

I’m okay with waiting 2 years if it means the devs can get breathing space to finish and rejuvenate the gaming experience without having to be subjected to crunch.

Ironically, companies buying competition is the true “modern warfare.”

PLEASE END ANNUAL RELEASES.

Sincerely,

An ex COD fan who doesn't want to see the series die like Medal Of Honor.

Giving the devs a break would absolutely be a good move. We don't need annual releases. We don't need certain games to be hashed out every single year in fear of us getting "bored" or "burned out" if it results in the devs burning out as well.

CoD being given the time and space for fleshed-out installments instead of annual releases would be the best thing that's happened to the franchise in years. MW2019 would still be selling gangbusters if they stuck with it with regular content updates and support for several years like Rainbow Six: Siege. Too bad it's a broken, buggy busted mess now since it's forced to share the same client with newer installments that have diluted and tainted its polished netcode and optimization.

I would say let Infinity Ward and Treyarch continue making CoD with Sledgehammer as their sole support studio, and let all the others go. Let Toys for Bob and Vicarious Visions continue to make Crash, Tony Hawk, and Spyro (or even Banjo-Kazooie!) games, put Beenox on a new Guitar Hero or Blur game, put High Moon on a new game, and put Raven on a new Hexen game with the Doom Eternal engine!

Honestly I think it's time COD enters a temporary retirement. We got WAY more than enough COD for a good long while. Just put the series on shelf for a good while and let the devs make something they want for the fans and not rush another "version" of the same game. Honestly annual releases is never good, Madden anyone? Just stop with the COD series for now, I'm sure people will be fine with it.

This already sounds amazing. Now the devs can take their time developing various projects instead of getting stressed out over annual releases.

Phil Spencer's optics are very good right now. He *Seems* to love gaming more than other Major CEOs. It may all be BS but I'm happy with how this acquisition situation is developing. Hoping to see some better games out of this.

Please for the love of god or anything you believe, release those devs from the yearly COD release, it's going to be a blessing for both them and us.

I'm all in for stopping annual release. I passed up on vanguard for the sole reason that it looked unfinished and realized there was no point in playing if the game was going to be forgotten in a year. Take notes from black ops 3. They kept adding onto it for the zombies fans even through the development of black ops 4.
