"Air pollution epidemiology has long studied triggering of acute cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality by short term ambient air pollution exposure, with use of the case-crossover design in such studies common. Accountability studies assess the effects of air quality policies and actions on the health of the community, and have employed numerous study designs and analytic approaches. I will discuss the case-crossover study design, and strengths and limitations of the design in air pollution accountability studies assessing the potential community health benefits of air quality policies and actions."
