Reducing Engineering Risks to ALARP

The purpose of this webinar is to introduce the new IMechE Safety & Reliability Group Report: ‘ALARP for Engineers: A Technical Safety Guide’. Changes in the law and guidance to the judiciary have rendered much of the existing guidance on ALARP invalid. The SRG have therefore sought to address these problems with an entirely new document, specifically for engineers. The group have taken the subject back to basics and this has led to a radical rethink of some common processes and tools, perhaps the most radical of which is a replacement for the common risk matrix. The objective has been to provide engineers with processes that are more objective, systematic and scientific. It has drawn upon case law and the views of lawyers, regulators, statisticians, academics and safety professionals.

The document could be regarded as a training manual for safety engineers, but it raises many thought-provoking issues, such as how to go about hazard identification and which tools to use in their analysis. Emerging methods, such as STPA are also covered as well as how to demonstrate ALARP using a legally admissible ‘Well-Reasoned Argument’. It should interest anyone in involved in risk management.
