I remember the BBC allowing (possibly encouraging) Gary Lineker to open the World Cup 2022 broadcast talking about Qatar’s human rights abuses. The opening ceremony wasn’t shown and was replaced by a BBC employee giving his opinion on human rights abuses in Qatar live on the BBC, in what is the most watched televised event in the U.K. and the world. Now, is that ok because he was giving his opinion on political issues in far away places, and that these political issues he tweeted about are so much closer to home?

Oh dear how sad never mind. Paid a lot of money for saying something that’s not worth listening to. But it’s about opinions and in my opinion best thing the BBC has done for a long time we’ll overdue

Hopefully this will break the BBC's belief that football / sports commentators have to paid millions of pounds to host and comment after matches. They would do better to use younger men, just retired from the sports who can bring fresh and new opinions. A lot of ex-players would be honoured to do this and be happy to be paid a normal living wage to do it. The myth that viewers like to see old men and listen to their opinions is about to be shattered. The old men's egos are also about to be shattered.
