Finally it is here! Pixar's Inside Out 2, the return to form and the closest we can get to a modern Pixar classic it seems have finally arrived! Going back to the roots of what worked before, with a concept that does legitmately have a lot of depth to explore within it. Is Pixar back? Or is this just another lazy sequel with that general audience mass appeal? Is this movie the answer to all of our prayers, and is it better than the original? Or are there any aspects I have complaints about or thoughts on how they missed the mark? Come learn all our ideas in this review, and speculative ideas for alternatives as we discuss How Inside Out 2 (Almost) Stuck The Landing...

...It's so early days I don't know if this opinion will give me some flak, or if the general census agrees about this movie...

I have many thoughts on all the intricate details of Inside Out 2. What are your opinions on the more smaller scale stuff? The stuff you think might not get mentioned in the usual discussion on the movie...?

Spoilers Alert: I loved this film, and appreciated that Anxiety wasn't turned into a villain. Instead, it was normalised, and shows which it's important to keep it in check.

no but really the scene where anxiety is frozen and crying and being chaotic at the same time pulled my heart strings..
because as someone with an anxiety disorder that's exactly how my anxiety feels like for me and for many others too you feel frozen in fear but at the same time chaotic confusion. anxiety feels so horrible it almost makes you cry of how overwhelming it can feel I really wished in the film where Riley is having the anxiety attack there could have been someone there comforting her maybe showing her some coping mechanisms a little something like that you know but overall I loved the film :]

I'm hyped for Inside Out 5 when Nostalgia suddenly takes over the headquarters and leaves Riley in a midlife crisis.

favorite scenes:
- joy loses it
- pouchie gets mouth-assaulted
- the entire panic attack scene
- embarrassment's character arc

speaking of, where does pouchie get all those explosives?

For the low-stakes stuff, I kind of disagree. Anxiety can definitely make little stuff like this seem like facing the end of the world, especially as a teenager, and I was throughly invested in the plot through seeing it through Riley’s lenses.

I do think the "stakes" being a hokey game was well done. In retrospect, yeah its not that serious, but its supposed to be that way, it shows that anxiety can make the smallest things seem like a big deal but when the emotions get together all the stakes disappear.

Tbh I feel like you ruined the movie for yourself by willingly spoiling yourself to hell and back 💀 Like your dissapointment with the movie is 100% a you problem, sorry. I didn't spoil myself at all and the "small" stakes still really hit for me and I felt like the movie did everything it needed to do. Maybe it's cause I'm technically still a teenager (tho just barely) so it was a lot more relatable for me but I was genuinely very invested in the plot and Riley's development felt natural.

It isn’t the old pixar we know and love, but its *definitely* a step in the right direction

Despite might not being Pixar's best movie ever, it's still quite refreshing to see them at least didn't screwed up the sequel and managed to put things back on track. Good job for them 👍

I think you are a bit too caught up in the hypotheticals and concept artbook. I thought the movie did everything it needed to, and most of the concepts you pitch would only muddle the movie and moral. third act conflict with a non-established abstract darkness? We lose the conflict between joy and anxiety, which is very much the center of the movie's plot. Joy dying? Sure, i can mostly agree there, except for the amount of hoops they would have to go to in order to justify it or bring her back when it has been previously established that the adults in that universe still have joy, despite it not taking point (lead). Riley made the team? Are you completely sure they confirmed that when we only see Riley's reaction to the letter? Since you go so deep into hypotheticals, here's another option: it is an invite to return to camp next year talking bout her unready potential and the special case the coach can make to keep the trio of friends together despite going to different schools. That right there is a bit complicated an answer, but there are many similar simpler ones along the same lines.

Scope. That is the key. Everything you propose draws the scope too thin to function the way we have the movie now, but that doesnt mean the concepts cant be explored in later sequels as long as enough heart remains to keep the audiences around despite the growing anti-disney sentiment.

This movie almost made me cry, all because anxiety being portrayed as a character hit home too damn well. As someone with GAD. The movie brought up certain techniques to help "anxiety" fall back which I've also been taught. I do like how anxiety comes clean later to say, it's a protection thing and not a takeover thing. Overall, great movie. Would I watch again?

Probably not, nothing to go crazy about.

One thing I really liked that I feel like is pretty surface level stuff that everyone kinda picked up on was how Riley's actions and demeanor started becoming....well more anxious the longerAnxiety held the position as dominant emotion. Like, in the beginning, when she first use the board, Riley didnt seem anxious, rather someone who was just a bit nervous(??). But towards the climax before the big scrimmage, when she was talking to other girls, it really felt like Anxiety in a Riley skin costume. Idk if that makes sense since im not good at conveying it, but yea

Seeing joy freak out in this movie was hilarious😂

In the anxiety attack scene, I was SOOO hoping that the friend Riley smacked into saw her going through that attack and would come to calm her down, comfort her through it. It would've been the perfect scene made up of compassion, forgiveness, and reconciliation just like the first one. And some relatablity of said friend having a panic attack and helping Riley ground her. THEY WERE SO CLOSE

I think if they had an extra 30-45 minutes it would have definitely been better. To add on what you said about joy fading away, I think it would have been great if she appeared to the deep dark secret and tried to confront it and basically learn accept her secret, instead of the dark secret being a gag. They also could've explored the back of the mind more and made it more interesting. I wish they did more with the other new emotions, besides anxiety, since she was already explored enough. I also wished they explored the islands while going to the back of the mind. If they did that it would've been a 10/10 instead of a 9/10.

As someone with GAD, you have no idea how happy I am that anxiety was actually represented well with how it just takes control and steam rolls everything else because that’s unironically how it feels constantly

Remeber from the first movie that line about wondering what is going inside their head. The whole time I watched the second movie, I wanted to know what Val's head looked like. This movie showed other people's minds less.
