I love how I can scroll through years of comments and most people only mention a couple of these guys. Every last one of them is a great drummer, including Fred Armisen, but I'm shocked to see how few mentions Copeland and Freese get. There are many arguments that would put them at the top of the list even with these heavy hitters.

Taylor is simply an outstanding rock drummer, highly unappreciated by many, especially those who are not drummers themselves. You play? Then you know what I'm saying. Copeland is unique here, because of his ability to listen, and to play as a true composer behind the kit. He's an artist with a great ear for all kinds of music with a singular knack for subtly incorporating middle Eastern time signatures into the rock idiom. There are many, many drummers more technical than all these guys put together, including Gavin Harrison, Dave Weckl, JoJo Mayer, Vinnie Calaiuta and Thomas Lang, to name only a few, but these guys are up there for good reasons. Fundamentally, they all have great natural ability as listeners and players, and have proven themselves over the course of time. Fantastic players, each and everyone.
