Note from TED: We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at an independent TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's curatorial guidelines. As she notes in the talk, Dr. Newport's specific medical guidance is based on ongoing research that has not yet been reviewed or published. The guidelines we give our TEDx organizers are described in more detail here:

__________________________

When Dr. Newport's husband Steven was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's, as a Doctor herself, she explored routine treatment options. But when his symptoms became so severe that he was not able to participate in clinical trials, her scientific deductions led to coconut oil, which has led to amazing results.

Mary T. Newport, M.D. grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was educated at Xavier University and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She is board certified in pediatrics and neonatology, training at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, and Medical University Hospital in Charleston, SC. She is founding director of the newborn intensive care unit at Spring Hill Regional Hospital, practicing full-time through All Children's Specialty Physicians and volunteer clinical faculty at University of South Florida. She was also founding director of the neonatal intensive Care unit at Mease Hospital Dunedin.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I stumbled upon this video 3 days ago and feel angels led me to it. I had two uncles who were diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. My mother's symptoms started later. I also have a cousin who was diagnosed a few years ago. I've recognized the symptoms coming on in myself. After my husband viewed the video, he went out and bought coconut oil. We started taking it that day. Thank you Dr. Newport.

Thank you so much, Dr Newport. I have Alzheimer's and I saw your TedTalk, and started MCT oil that day. I am so much better and I finally have hope. You are my hero

I read Dr Newport's article in our Newspaper many years ago and I started eating Coconut oil in the hope not to get Alzheimer like my Mom had. I think I am functioning quite well at the age of 81, I am very social and use my computer researching everything that benefits me and so far my mind still works well. Thank you Dr Newport.

When she said “for better or for worse. In sickness and in health” she meant it ❤

God bless this doctor who is not afraid to share her findings in a world that is quick to criticize and slow to change. We need more people like her!

This is fascinating . It’s made me think about something and everything the doctor says make sense. I come from Fiji . In the pacific islands, we cook with alot of coconut . Usually the coconut is grated and the juice extracted from the scrapings - coconut milk or coconut cream . This is used a lot in our food . If what the Doctor is saying it correct, then I can vouch for it as I don’t ever recall anyone ever diagnosed with Dementia . It goes hand in hand with the great social networks we all have with each other . The elderly are respected and included in everything .
Great video .

She is a woman ahead of her time. This lecture is six years old and almost everything that she said Is coming true.

This woman saved my life with this knowledge. I was in my forties when I noticed marked cognitive decline, so when I found her online I immediately began taking MCTs and noticed change right away. I am so grateful to her!

I've been treating my grandmother with coconut oil since 2011 after finding Mary Newport's videos on the internet, and it worked so well we stopped regular medication, and my grandmother's Alzheimers improved so much with all that low carb diet, coconut oil and Mct oil intervention that she is a way better then any other Alzheimer patient that have the disease for 4 or 5 years like her. So, I have to advice, if you're thinking to try coconut oil and low carb intervention to help your beloved ones who have Alzheimers, take the chance. What you've got to lose?

I love Dr Newport! She opened my eyes to what the human brain is made of, and what it needs to be fed to stay healthy and optimized!

I just heard that my mother who has dementia stage 4 began being given just a tablespoon in her morning oatmeal. My mother reportedly is gaining some of herself day by day. This is such exciting news!! I so look forward to seeing "my" mom again!! Thank you so much for your work in this amazing research.

Mary Newport is a sweetheart! So great that she wants everyone else to benefit as well and took the time to write a book and continued to promote the information. Our hat is off to you, Mary!

One of the best TED talks. Really informative and so sad that institutions didn't hear you. I strongly believe that wherever money and grand fundings are involved, simple good ideas are going down the drain. Its so simple, no pharmaceutical want it to be so simple, because its not lucrative. Hope one day your contribution be recognised and the treatment gets to the people

I wish this simple treatment was around when my mama had Alzheimer’s in the 70’s and dying at age 67 in 1982. I was just a girl and can honestly say Alzheimer’s was a wrecking ball to my mom, family and my own life. This is the first shred of hope I’ve had yet for Alzheimer’s. I feel empowered.
