The REAL Rise of the Most Powerful Godfather | PART One 🌹
How the REAL Vito Corleone Became “The Godfather” | The Rise of Frank Costello
We all know Don Vito Corleone, The Godfather, the powerful mafia boss, known for his cunning and wisdom, intelligence and possessing an aura of power and respect. A charismatic leader that started with nothing, and then built an empire. All characteristics that powerful people aspire to possess. Essentially, in the world of the mafia, he was the “perfect don”, mastering the balance of controlling and pulling the strings of power, in both the streets and the criminal underworld.

But what if I told you there is ONE particular real life mobster that heavily inspired the character of Don Vito. A real don who relied more on his intelligence rather than muscle to get what he wanted.

This was the notorious Frank Costello, one of the original godfathers of the mafia. Alongside the likes of Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegal, Vito Genovese, Arnold Rothstein, Frank Costello would be an essential player in creating something quite extraordinary. They managed to somehow organise crime. Going from running small bootlegging operations to controlling entire cities and spreading their influence even abroad. A newer and much more powerful criminal organisation the United States had ever seen...
Making offers they couldn't refuse, Costello would build a network of powerful people all owing him a favour. This allowed him to have judges, businessmen, politicians, officers, you name it, All In his pocket like nickels and dimes.
As boss Costello was now one of the most powerful men in New York, maybe even the country, enjoying all the luxuries and benefits that come with it. Unfortunately for him there does come a hefty price, and his biggest challenges were yet to come.

Godfather I and II are timeless masterpieces, I never get tired of it.

You have to give the guy some credit for never putting violence in the front, and always holding the mindset to negotiate. The fact that he lived to die of old age goes to show just how well-respected he was.

Frank Costello’s reputation as the archetype of the perfect gangster is well warranted. Equally skilled at making money and diplomacy, two rare skills. Michael Franseze, the former capo regime of the Columbo family has also cited Frank Costello as his favorite Boss of the La Cosa Nostra.

Costello, was as good as you can get, smart, quiet, and diplomatic. He tastefully enjoyed the fruits of his success, while using them to still keep garnering influence. I think he should have laid a little lower like Carlo Gambino, but that's 20/20 hindsight.

Your videos are the most concise and enlightening examinations of the Godfather story anywhere. Always left with a feeling of time well spent and always learn more about so many things - power, LCN, psychology, ambition, treachery.... I could go on, but you get the point.

Thank you for the edication. 🙏

What I like about The Godfather movies is they don’t cuss at all.
Maybe once in Italian but it’s not like that.
Like it keeps it respectful.

You mentioned in the episode a number of times, the "mustache pete's " but failed to show the origin of that. Pete Morello, the original mustache pete, was the founder of the american mafia itself and boss of all bosses but there's rarely a documentary or episode on him, which is kind of crazy because their are literally hundreds of these episodes on the rest of the mafia

I have a not too distant family member who was very close to Costello. He apparently always spoke highly of him.

You can't leave out Meyer Lansky the Little Big Man. Lucky, Bugsy, Frank and Meyer played different roles on the same team and each played their part in La Cosa Nostra becoming what it was in it's Golden Age

if you ever talk to a real capo or don even just for a moment you can immediately sense just how charismatic and slightly intimidating they are, they can easily make you feel very welcomed and comfortable like an old relative then if thats not working or you offend them the vibe switches very quickly. very interesting people they got to power for a good reason

I wish the video would list the movies or shows that the scenes are taken from ... I'd love to add those movies to my collection!

Something I would love to see you do, is a video on, "Who was stronger, Michael Corleone, or Alejandro Sosa, " from Scarface.
I've always felt that Alejandro Sosa is an intriguing character whose past and rise isn't talked about. I would like to hear your thoughts about him. 👍
