Don't buy Heinously overpriced Wal-Mart quality steel from MLM's like Cutco, just buy a Tojiro

My now Wife bought a set of Cutco knives must be twenty five years or so ago to help a friend get their business started. She wasn't very nice to them before we married. I've been using them for ten years now and they have all performed well. She said they were expensive, but they have never failed us in the kitchen. Take care of your tools, and they will take care of you.

That test was objectively terrible. You will never be using a knife for something that hard and the one that gives out is the one with the thinner, and this sharper, edge.

Free sharpening and replacement. Worth about 200 per knife per lifetime

My wife and I bought our first Cutco knife set in 1993 from her brother, who was paying his way through college. I was initially put off by the price of the knives, but we were doing something to assist her brother. I was a retail meat cutter then, and I knew knives as they were a vital tool for my trade. I used and still have my Forschner, now Victorinox, knives. I preferred the rosewood handles on the knives as they felt better in my hand (I still have all my fingers). I would never use a Cutco knife if I was still cutting meat. Like any trade, you use the tool best suited for the job. We have the most extensive knife block set that Cutco sells. It was a ton of money. But over the years, they have backed their product 100% for any discrepancies. I send them back every five years to sharpen them as we use ours daily. They come back sharp and polished. I will not criticize "The Cook's Eye" as this is his channel; it is his opinion, and he has every right to express it. However, I'm afraid I have to disagree with him.

Let me say this. Knives have a specific purpose, depending on the task at hand. Knives need to be sharpened. I don't care what kind of knife it is. Yes...quality matters, but they have to be sharpened by someone. This is where most knives get ruined. It is all about educating yourself to the level of proficiency you want to reach. I really don't get wrapped around the axle when people complain about the cost of something. Some people will drink four Starbucks Venti "Ripoff-O-Latte" w/soy or will be into their fifth bottle of Fiji water and complain about the price of a steak while sipping it. To each his own. I know that Cutco knives are excellent for home kitchen use. However, there are many options out there. Choose wisely.
Cheers!

I inherited my Mom's set of Cutco. She got them back in the late 70's or early 80's. I sent them once to have them sharpened. They work well. I've since gotten a manual sharpener and sharpen the ones I use a lot with that. Some say those sharpeners with kill the blade...I really don't know. It seems to work. I really can't complain about the performance of the Cutco knives. I keep them sharp and they have never failed me.

Man I would have thought the same thing. However my mom bought a kitchen set and hunting knife to help some kid out in 1994ish(not sure but mid 90s) they are the double d and are freaking amazing. I laugh every holiday bc we are still slicing up all our meat with them. My hunting knife has cleaned deer, turkey, fish, and all of my camping needs for nearly 30yrs. The blade retention on the double d is fascinating. No experience with the straight edge knives though

My Cutco's are tough, sharp af, hold an edge, and dress up with a steel easily. I like that they don't chip, like my Shun's. My Shun's chip easily, don't hold an edge well, and are difficult to sharpen. Only knife knerds care about the spec sheet. Our Cutco's perform great. I would buy them again. That Cutco you damaged, can be sent in and sharpened, free, and if not salvageable, you will get a new knife back hassle-free. Also, made in the USA, which I like.

My roommate in 2003 took a job selling these that lasted all of 2 weeks. She wasn't a very good salesperson. She gave me the demo set after she quit and I used them for years. They beat the hell out of the Farberware and Chicago Cutlery available at the Walmart in my desolate swamp town at the time. The paring knife was solid as fuck but it was the first to disappear :(

Anyway, much as I'd love to have hand-forged Japanese Damascus in my kitchen, Mercer BPX and Victorinox are my best friends.

My parents are 83 they’ve been married for almost 60 years they have the same CUTCO knives they did when they got married one of the knives broke they sent it back and they gave him a new one. I respectfully disagree. My father went to culinary school. They’re decent knives.

How come you didn't do the same thing to the other brand of the knife? You only did a one sided example...

Not sure what year you got your Cutco examples....I bought the Premier full set 15 years ago. I like to sharpen knives so I have never used the Cutco free sharpening....But I will tell you I never have a problem returning the edge to razor sharp. I will mention the little paring knife blade is a bit soft....but it is a Paring Knife!

I bought a full set of Cutco knives in 1992...and still have and use them. I don't think your criticisms hold much water. It seems you have some kind of grudge against the company that is only tangentially related to their product.
