Even a secularist or an unbeliever would have to recognize that the Ten Commandments are of worth to a society.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) W. I am delighted that someone finally covered the topic, and Dennis Prager himself to explain the exact words! So... you needed a soldier on your discussion panel... I was once an infantryman... infantry's mission is to close with and destroy the enemy... If you're a soldier and a Christian you need to do a lot of thinking. Let me suggest, in the present age, there are detailed Rules of Engagement that explain when you can use deadly force, on whom you may use it, when the appropriate time is... and even where.

For example, it is very important to be in uniform, which marks you (or your enemy) as a legitimate target, as differentiated from the public at large. And you are not a legitimate target just by wearing a uniform, but your government needs to have delineated exactly what country/enemy force you are fighting... (you can't just go to your country's border and shoot across at a neighboring country's border guard because he is in a uniform and it is different than yours...) Timing is also important, if soldiers meet on the battlefield, it would be killing. If a soldier has surrendered, is unarmed, and in captivity, it is clearly murder if you harm/kill that soldier.

There are some rabbit holes that can be followed that are interesting, but no one in a public forum is going to want to explain them.

This is great! Bringing round table theological discussion, into the public and attempting to make in mainstream. I've only seen these discussions in obscure highly specific contexts.

This is refreshing to hear someone make that distinction that Dennis did. I've always questioned why it isn't "murder", but according to him, it is.
I am pleased by that.

As someone who grew up with the King James Version, I never had any trouble with this verse because the rest of the Law given by Moses presupposes killing in eating or sacrificing animals, war and judgement (capital punishment). I've always taken it to mean the general rule is Don't Kill. Then the following exceptions are given to when killing is permissible and even required.

When the King James Bible was translated, back in that time, kill ment murder...
If you killed someone in self defense, you defended yourself...
If you killed someone on a battlefield, you fought in battle...
If you murdered someone, you killed them...

I like that the title of this video is discussed immediately.

One of the things that I find that many people miss when reading the Commandments, is that all of the commandments are there to protect the individual. If you murder, somebody is gonna wanna murder you if you steal, somebody may kill you if you commit adultery somebody will want to kill you if you bear false witness against your neighbor, somebody will want to kill you, etc. etc. the only ones that aren’t specifically protective of the individual are, honor your father and mother, and to worship God and God only, but one could also argue that those protect the individual also.
I often hear people reject Christianity, because there are so many rules and regulations, but when you get right down to it, Jesus didn’t give a lot of rules and regulations, he only gave two. Love God, love your neighbor…. Do this and you fulfill the Law. “For God is Love”

The question of when it is right to kill wasn’t answered well.

But the ancients knew it. It’s to do with natural law.

If someone violates natural law against your person then you are righteous to to retaliate

Dennis also inadvertently conflates the word "homicide" with Murder. Technically, "homicide" is a word used by medical examiners to describe a death caused by another person. It does not necessarily mean it was murder. A Murder is a homicide, but a homicide is not always "murder".

My thought process after the comment about "legitimate authority" goes like this. Is the authority that decides whether any given instance of killing was or was not murder itself acting consistent with the commandments of God? Are those individuals above average in their own obedience? Are they humble and subservient to God? If they aren't those things then they aren't a trustworthy measure of whether any given instance of killing is or isn't murder. If you can't find an authority that is those things then you can only trust in your own obedience to the commandments and what habits that leads you to develop, what you learn by your own study of the scriptures regarding what actions are and are not permissible, and what you are taught by the Holy Spirit. We cannot defer our righteousness to others, we are accountable for ourselves. As indicated by the individual tense they also mentioned.
