It’s 2018, BMW. Surely you can seamlessly integrate during the build stage, a front camera module into the back section of rear view mirror and rear camera module somewhere near the brake light indicator located atop the rear screen. Customers can then choose this as paid option during build stage and also pay for their own SD card. This unintegrated eye camera device isn’t novel nor the innovative answer customers desire in 2018 and beyond. Looking forward to BMW providing this innovative seamlessly integrated solution soon.

Having a dashcam is probably one of the best things to have in your vehicle these days. I've had the previous version of this camera and I currently have this one too. But it isn't without its drawbacks.

1) The older version was much easier to use if you had to record an event and send it off to your insurer. Simply taking out the memory card and plugging into your computer meant that you could select the individual files for both front and rear camera's and save them for insurance purposes. The new version has both the front and rear camera footage in one container file which requires some knowledge of video editing software in order to separate. Not to mention that there is no software for either PC or Mac which would allow to export the footage, making the process of downloading any usable footage highly convoluted. And I should also mention that to view the footage isn't as simple as plugging the memory card into a computer. You also have to download a video codec pack just to view it and even then you do not get to see the rear view footage for the reasons mentioned above.

2) Connectivity is limited to one device so if you share your car with someone else then you are going to have to decide who is going to be the main person in charge of routine maintenance and retrieval of footage.

3) BMW missed a trick with online connectivity on this system. Allowing you to connect online while paired to your handset would have been a massive plus. I know this may not be an issue for newer BMW models, with the appropriate options for a connected vehicle but for older cars or those without permanent online connectivity, being able to pair with a mobile handset would be a big convenience for recording incidents and automatic uploading to a cloud service of your choosing.

4) Not that it is a big issue but there is no way to disconnect the rear camera if it became faulty and kept on boot cycling the whole system, which happened to mine.

I'm pretty happy with the system overall but BMW could have made it a lot less convoluted to use the footage from it. There should have been some PC and Mac software available for the user to export both front and rear camera footage to easily usable files for a third party in the case of an incident but there isn't, which is a shame. Given my choice again I would have probably opted for a competitor system that would allow for simple and convenient access to easily usable footage.

(Edit: You can use VLC player to view front and rear footage from the camera system. There is an option in the video tab which allows you to select which track to view. However, there is no way to export this footage into its individual tracks as far as I am aware and you are still left with trying to find a way to make it useable for a third party. )

I have this. It is annoying because a) the recordings don't play back in a continuous stream, meaning you have to search for specific sections, and b) every time I go over a bump or brake hard it bleeps three times - and I have NO IDEA why!!

BMW Car Eyes are rubbish. Had the original installed into my new X3 in 2018-stopped working in 2020. Then I had the Advanced EYE 2.0 to replace it-2 years later this also topped working correctly (only recorded in parking mode and rear cam did not work) - USELESS!. BMW not interested in replacing or investigating and recommended I purchase the Advance Eye 3 - really?? - another £550 for an unreliable product-done think so BMW-get a grip!

Piece of Junk, BMW should never have put their name to this, they should have done a deal with Nextbase of stayed with the original model that actually worked even though it looked crap.

The BMW Car Eye 2.0 is a joke. Don't buy it. A camera that isn't seen is superior to one that blends its design with the car. Get a dash cam, just don't spend hundreds of dollars or pounds on a BMW badged hunk a junk. Get a Viofo A119. It records 1440p at 60p with lots of different recording options and costs less than $100 with GPS. Or an Aukey DR02 if you need front and back cameras. They are less conspicuous than the car eye with higher quality video.
