New HIV drug 100% effective - but why does it cost $40,000?

If you had the tools to fight a disease that kills 630,000 people a year - would you share them?

Scientists at the world AIDS conference in Munich have revealed that a groundbreaking new drug to prevent HIV infection - marketed at $40,000 per person - could be made for just $40.

Trials show that the twice yearly injection - from pharmaceutical giant Gilead - is 100% effective against HIV.

Gilead has not told us how much they spent on developing or purchasing the drug. But the current price puts it out of reach of those who would benefit most.

I am a stage 4 terminal cancer patient, but with targeted inhibitors I can stay alive, as long as I take the meds... the catch? They cost $3000 a month for life. I am fortunate to afford them NOW, but I can never retire. I lost my medical coverage because the diagnosing doctor reported that my cancer had been present for more than 4 years, while my medical coverage was only 3 years old. I had no clue that I had cancer. I have written to the founding pharmaceutical company to ask for some kind of help, but have received no reply. They make their real money from medical insurance companies, not individuals like myself.

There are certain drugs that shouldn’t be for profit . Pharmaceutical companies can make up the profit on price of other drugs that less essential like Lemsip or cough syrup
