Okay I was expecting you to just jump in, but this is an excellent primer. I haven't seen such a concise coverage of 1.0 and plot points necessary to hit the ground running in 2.0. Well done.

Oh. Oh thats sick. Updating it in real time and do crazy stuff like spawn monsters in towns to show how bad things are getting is super interesting and cool

I had NO idea the ending of the first release of FF14 had been that dramatic. My jaw is very much on the floor here.

I always loved the idea of the devs being like, "To heck with it, we're gonna NUKE THE ENTIRE THING to rebuild it from the ground it, AND we're going to make it plot relevant!", but never knew the whole context. Thank you for this!

Holy crap, the sheer STONES it must have taken for the devs to do something like that. Literally turning the suicide of the old game into a plot beat? Brilliant and also dead crazy.

As someone who recently started playing FFXIV and was curious about the previous game’s story, this was incredibly helpful info! Thanks for the primer, Dan!

It never ceases to amaze me how much love and work you put into anything you publish Dan! It would've been completely fine to drop a few links about 1.0 in the description and dive right in. Instead you somehow, miraculously, managed to sum up and capture the magic of of the rise and fall of 1.0 (see what i did there? I'll see myself out >.<) in just over 10 minutes. I could never get most my friends to watch The Speaker's Network's series because they're quite a time commitment, which is understandable. You've bridged that gap! I cant wait to see whats to come!

Damn, the way they released the new version and the lead up to it sounds amazing. I'd love to get a player-based perspective on all those events.

The madlad didn't just send 1.0 off with a bang. He put together as many boxes of fireworks as he could, lit them up, then captured the entire thing with a slow motion camera.

Fortnite did something similar with the black hole thing, which I thought was really cool. But YoshiP cranked the concept up to 11, and holy cow the result is AWESOME. I can't even imagine what it must've felt like to power through a bad game and experience such a cinematic finale.

Thanks for putting this together Dan, now I understand better why people like the ending of 1.0 so much! I'm looking forward to the next episodes!

Dan, are you, finally, the one person who is going to make me want to play this game?!
This video was super interesting, I didn't know about these details.

I never knew the whole story about the relaunch using monster events and the moon growing and turning red as a premonition alongside patches. What a cool idea. Also what confidence they must have had. That really is something only an MMO could do *that* well.

I'm excited about Bad Idea. I don't play MMOs anymore, so I can watch and enjoy Dan's commentary without fear of spoilers.

This was a really nice and concise way to explain the major points of 1.0's story and troubled beginnings. As someone who experienced 1.0 from the very beginning all the way up through Dalamud's fall, it's always interesting to see people learning about what we went through back then. The game definitely wasn't great when it first started, but I'd argue that once they got all of those initial QoL patches out of the way and the game became more playable, it wasn't actually all that terrible. It definitely could never have become what 14 is now though - and frankly I much prefer ARR's story and world design to 1.0's very copy-pasted maps.

But I am sad that current and new players will never really get to experience anything as crazy as those final days right before the end. The Atomos appearing at aetheryte camps and spawning monsters, the devs dropping monsters into Ul'dah or even spawning Nael themselves in to fight players in the city. It was cool to see them kinda revisit this with the Rising a couple years ago when they did "The Calamity Retold" instance. I'm hoping that makes a return.

That's... Actually pretty unironically cool.

FF14 is such a magical thing that it even exists, much less in its current state. I love that the in-game story has so many parallels to the real life events!

I had no idea about the game's history (thanks deployment) but that in-game transition from 1.0 to 2.0 must have been BRILLIANT to experience. Thanks for putting together this primer so we can all appreciate it and the people involved more!

Looking in from finishing the Free Trial, the echoey version of Answers while watching Dalamud drop further and further downwards hits really hard. I really liked this and it gives general insight into what happened in 1.0 as a player who started playing during 5.4.

That. Was. Spectacular. This makes me even more interested in seeing this bad amazing idea.

I always felt like some piece was missing from the history, especially on the empire part. Now everything makes so much more sense.

And oh boy, i know playing ff xiv 1.0 was rough, but those days leading to the end of the game, seem so cool. And experiencing te rebirth that must be something so unique. Great Video Dan love what you do
