Paul Desmond - Brandenburg Gate alto sax soloTranscription (Dave Brubeck Quartet plays J.S. Bach)

Is Paul Desmond Bach reincarnated? Listen to how Paul Desmond improvises in an unique blend of jazz phrases and counterpoint lines like Bach would have done.

The tune is called "Brandenburg Gate" as played by the Dave Brubeck Quartet on "Jazz Impressions from Eurasia".

Enjoy!

Paul Desmond's command of strong melodic lines within his improvisations always impressed me far more than other jazz artists which often leave me wondering how much wandering the ear can accept without the feeling they lost many listeners. Not so with Paul. His craftsmanship shines brilliantly.

Paul Desmond has a particular sound. It's the perfect middle between classical sax and jazz sax.

I've never looked much into Desmond's playing, but wow, this is just...amazing. And again, props for being able to transcribe this!

I always thought the Brubeck quartet was one of the best sounding quartets ever, jazz or otherwise. They just all seemed to intuitively understand each other, and in my opinion their mesh of classical and jazz is the height of musicality. Not to mention they were all class acts

I used to believe that Desmond's sound is the feature that makes him unique. I was thinking "he does not play that fast, so he's just depending on this sound". However, it's not just that when you hear him play. Much later, after I detached him from the "take five" myth, I realized that apart from the sound (which is awesome)any bar of his improvisations could be an idea for another improvisation, like a song's main tune. Also, his lines sound good even if I play them (OK, not so good, but still...)

Still the most beautiful tone I know and that I try to achieve on my soprano, it's been quite a time and I still have a difficulty because I found that harder reed is better for this, I use a 3.5, but I always have to play for at least 40min. for the reed to get really good, does anybody knows if is that's right?

Waited for this. Thanks for every Paul's solo you transcribe. It would be amazing if you share some light on some concepts of his personal playing in a video. Keep sharing the word of the great Paul Desmond!!
