As a young boy who was inspired by Gordon Banks to play in the nets, I used to write to all my heroes back in the day for an autograph or a photo and the only one who replied was Gordon Banks! Not only did he reply with a signed photo but a letter as well ! Pure class! A true legend of the game and the best ever keeper! A true gentleman whose outstanding goalkeeping will never be equalled!

48 years on, and still the greatest save ever. I've seen it so many times, but this is the first time I kept my eyes on Pele as Banks made the save. It was such a brilliant header that bounced in the most awkward spot for a keeper, and Pele reacted as if he'd had his wallet stolen!

Back in the early 80's Gordon was in Berlin and took time out to visit 38 (Berlin) Field Squadron RE. We enjoyed his company for several hours in the Sappers Bar on camp, where we listened to his football tales and got thoroughly drunk. The loss of his eye never deterred his commitment to the public. He was a very kind gentleman and a true patriot, moreover he was a first class ambassador for his country. We were very happy young soldiers the day Gordon visited us in our squadron bar.

This clip lasts 3:19 from a time when there were no cameras at most of the games, unlike today when every game has a dozen or so filming every bit of action, so just how many great saves did he make that only those at the games were privileged enough to witness, had he been playing today you could sit and watch his incredible ability for hours .
