The Ur Dragon V3 - High Power Deck Tech and Guide - EDH/Commander

Hello Everyone and Welcome back! Its finally here! This video will showcase my newest incarnation of my ever popular Ur Dragon Deck! This deck features some of the newest dragons released over the past year, some very strong and powerful new spells, some great budget options and even some spicy card choices. Although the deck at some point went through some major overhaul, ultimately I have settled on a similar vision as before. As mentioned, I did test out a dedicated Treasure Themed deck as well as a deck that strictly focused more on large splashy creatures. Those builds were explosive but often the results weren't consistent and hard to recover when interrupted. I chose to scrap those in favor of this as not only do I think this list is better and overall stronger but it remains true to the strategy of curving out and taking advantage of The Ur Dragons Eminence ability to maximize our plays. This is a hardnose build that aims to start deploying value based Dragons starting on turn 3-4 such as Ojutai, Guardian Scalelord, and Rith to set the pace and accumulate value. In addition the deck is packed with tutors for optimization. From there we are able to establish an aggressive pace in the game. Once we have stabilized, the table starts to become oppressed as the effects from cards like Dragon Tempest, Kindred Discovery, Scourge of Valkas start to stack up. We can then look for one of our many haymakers such as Last March of the Ents to close the game! It has been a while so this is a long one. The list for Moxfield will have any additional real time changes I will make in the future. With that, enjoy the video and remember to like comment and subscribe. As always engagement and feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Huge fan of your Ur/Dragon deck, it’s been my first real high power deck and I absolutely love it!!

Awesome deck tech. Love just listening to selection of dragon choices. I powered down the deck a bit by making some cuts. Nothing against these cards or people who use these cards, I just prefer a bit more slow and battle-cruisery Commander. For anybody who is interested here's what I did and my reasonings below:

- Cuts: Deathrite Shaman, Dockside Extortionist, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, All 5 Tutors, Ancient Tomb, Gaea's Cradle, Urza's Saga, Hall of Heliods Generosity, Yavimaya Hollow.
+ Adds: Scaled Nurturer, Bloomtender, Farseek, Dragon's Hoard, Magda, Rivaz, Return of the Wildspeaker, Klauth Unrivaled Ancient, Utvara Hellkite, x1 of each basic land.

14 Card Cut total.

Deathrite is better in higher power tables. Feels underwhelming in lower power tables without many fetches to use in the graveyard. It just becomes kinda bad pseudo grave hate. Scaled Nurturer is a easy dork replacement. It even costs only G thanks to Ur Dragon. Dockside wins games too fast and can generate you ludicrous mana. A good 2-3 color mana dork like a Bloom Tender works wonders in this spot of getting mana without feeling oppressive.

Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt are both just insanely fast. Either everyone's using it at the pod or nobody should imo. Same applies to Sol Ring but, Sol Rings dirt cheap we all just run it. Lotus is not that bad, especially when you have a high CMC commander like Ur Dragon or Gishath. But when somebody with a low CMC commander gets it and sets up an insane board turn 1 it can feel really bad. Just adding a Farseek and a Dragon's Hoard is good replacement here. Fetching more lands for 2 mana and getting to choose between mana or card draw off Dragons Hoarde is nice.

Removing the 5 tutors is both a budget and deck building choice. Tutors win games and some have come down in price. But tutors usually result in you going for the same stuff over and over and can make games get repetitive very quickly, imo. In place of the 5 tutors I added 1 very thematic tutor: Magda. She can search out any dragon (or artifact) we want. Since the deck can get overboard with generating treasures, she feels like an excellent treasure payoff. Running something like a Magda also lets you be a bit more creative with your dragon selection. Like running a Thrakkus/Swashbuckler for when you wanna close out games. Or grabbing one of our dragons that generates tokens. If you have an insane surplus of treasures you can even go for like a Terror of the Peaks or something and just burn people to death by comboing out all your dragons. She's very powerful, but we also don't have a way to tutor her out to instantly win the game. And none of the cEDH artifact infinite mana combos either so. Her power is somewhat reigned in by those factors in this deck.

Aside from Magda, for the other 4 slots I added in 2 extra big dragons (Klauth gets us more mana to play with, Utvara gets us more bodies to play with), Rivaz is a dork and lets us recur our dragons in the graveyard. Doubles as ramp and reanimator, great card. And then Return of the Wildspeaker can draw us a lot of cards or be used to close out the game by pumping creatures as a combat trick. A Rishkars could go well here too. But Last March of the Ents kinda does something similar so I wanted to diversify a little bit. If you don't like Klauth or Utvara you could cut them for a different dragon or more card draw. Honorable mentions here are Thrakkus for big pump, Balefire Dragon for one-sided board wipes, and Cavernhoard Dragon for a big beater that gets cost reducted and gives us lots of treasures.

Ancient Tomb/Gaea's/Urza's are all pretty up there in price and big haymaker lands. Ancient Tomb is a Mana Crypt on a land, Gaea's needs no introduction, and Urza's is cracked when running the fast mana. Since we cut Lotus/Crypt Urza's is a dead card in the deck. Gaea's is just too expensive. And Ancient Tomb is Mana Crypt on a land with a steep price point. I chose to cut two of the utility lands as well (Yavimaya and Heliods) so that I could cut 5 lands total and just slot in 5 basics. Deck is shocking itself a lot when you run a 5 mana base with all the fetches and shocks. Now we can fetch some lands without putting ourselves in the danger zone. There's also a lot of cards that people play which incidentally have "Opponent may search their library for a basic land" (Like Assassin's Trophy lol) and I want to be able to capitalize on those effects when I can.

There's obviously other staples and cards you could cut to make it even FURTHER BUDGET as far as some interaction goes. But ultimately dragons and 5C mana bases will be pricey. So this is the best compromise of saving money while also toning down power level. Other good targets to cut if you'd like are Cyclonic Rift, Mana Drain, Teferi's Protection, Great Henge, Rhystic Study, and Smothering Tithe.

I highly recommend the new Galadriel's dismissal. You can protect your own board from removal, or clear an opponents board so they can't block you

I love your updates on the Ur-Dragon. As usual, individual cards (spells mainly) are subjective and meta dependent. That all said, you are great at putting together EDH decks. I enjoy the updates and will do a deeper dive into the list and compare to your older list and my edited list and see if I am missing cards. Keep it up my man

I wrote down this whole list titled "BIS UR DRAGON" something to aspire to and slowly build. Your land base was most interesting to me, I started collecting all the triomes too but happy to see they aren't necessary. Really love and appreciate the detailed breakdown. Keep up the awesome work :P

I am both very excited for the return to Tarkir in 2025, but also dreading it, because I know there will be some tough decisions and cuts I will have to make to my Ur-Dragon deck. Great tech as always, looking forward to the next year.

Really like how this deck looks. I’ve been playing on and off since 2016 so have missed a lot of cards. I remember having the Precon with The Ur Dragon and after returning I wish I hadn’t sold all of my 2017 Precons.
Lucky me though, I bought my first pack of Commander Masters yesterday and pulled my old buddy. Now I want to build this deck with him. I’ll be interested to see how this deck keeps on evolving.

Yo your last build I currently am running minus just a couple changes preference wise not necessarily saying better! Anyway thank you for the time you put into this and MAAAAD respect for your great deckbuilding skills. Fantastic job bro looking forward to seeing the changes made as I will adjust accordingly haha

Zurgor and Ojutai can trigger 3 times per combat, or more if you have battles, assuming you have 3 dragons that can hit 3 different opponents. I've had Sarkhan out before and been able to look at the top 18 cards of my library in 3 card sets hahaha. Such a powerful card

I was building a commander decklist for ur-dragon last night and had filtered MTG cards by having dragon in their effect text when I found Decadent Dragon (I'm new to MTG too so really just wanted to see every dragon card), ordered it right away, glad I wasn't alone in my thinking. Some cards in here are too expensive for me as a newbie (mana crypt, jeweled lotus for example), but glad I seem to be on the same path
