Sony Xperia 1iii Review: Cinematic Speed (With A Burst Of Compromise)

[SONY XPERIA 1iii REVIEW]

Sony smartphones are weird – and in this context that's a compliment. Honestly that’s why I look forward to a new one every summer: with the exception of foldables, no other phone pushes the envelope quite like a Sony Xperia. No one else is cramming a screen this sharp and a variable telephoto camera into a water-resistant chassis tall enough to stand out in a crowd. No one else has a camera division with a pedigree quite like Sony’s. And no one else is going as far to blur the line between professional and phone photography.

To test a phone like that, you need to give it a setting worthy of its stated skills – so I took it to one of my favorite places in the US to see how it tackled the monuments (and the mysteries) of Montauk. I’m Michael Fisher and this is the Xperia 1iii Road Trip Review!

[ABOUT MRMOBILE'S XPERIA 1iii REVIEW]

MrMobile's Xperia 1iii Review was produced following approximately two weeks with an Xperia 1iii review unit provided by Sony. Tested on AT&T in Brooklyn and Montauk, NY (and points between).

MrMobile does not accept compensation from the manufacturers of the products he reviews in exchange for producing content. No payment was provided and no manufacturer or carrier was afforded a preview or copy approval rights concerning this review. The lone sponsor of this video is HelloFresh.

[CLARIFICATION]

As some have pointed out, the video footage being presented from the Cinema Pro app in Venice CS is not color graded, which of course makes it look much worse than it would otherwise. This was a production constraint on my part and I apologize for the confusion.

I was about to lose hope in finding flagships with both a headphone jack and SD card support after LG left the scene. Glad to see Sony picking up the mantle

Sony doing their own thing as always. I've always appreciated how utilitarian they are.

I have the 5 mk II and I took the phone on a trip leaving, the gear at home, and it was so much better than expected. I usually take most of my gear with me on vacation but this time I challenged myself to only use this phone and I was not disappointed, 3 lenses and the fastest autofocus/shooting time combo I ever used....some small piece of advice - use the pro app with smallest iso on daylight and the standard app on nighttime, the most obvious thing on this phone for a "pro" photographer is the blue sky and the green grass rendering, it's so much better than any phone...it doesn't have the "phone" look. Thank you for the review and sorry for my english.

Hey y'all. For a little more info on the audio distortion at 13:30: I think it's the wind in the trees that's the culprit here. If you listen to my voice in the shot a few minutes later it's perfectly clear from about the same distance, and the only thing missing is the trees. Not an excuse for that horrendous level of distortion, and I really wish Sony would have included analog audio in on the 3.5mm, but it is what it is.

that radar dish isn't as dormant as it seems! 🤔👻🤣)

This is the fifth review of this Sony device I am seeing, and the only one that is realistic, pragmatic, non-bs and shows the good and the bad in equal light. Kudos to you, Mr. Mobile... I hope others learn from you on balancing a viewpoint so beautifully.

Why does no one criticize every little flaw about Samsung and Apple phones but greatly over-exaggerate any Sony Xperia shortcomings? Most of this extremely nitpicky things for the cameras have lots of errors from the reviewer in the first place.

Watching on my Sony Xperia 1 II 👍. I want the frosted gray!

Why did you do the audio recording test in a way where we never hear both phones in the same scene to be actually able to compare?

May have to pick one up to check it out. Love the design of this. Flat display, no cutout, no notch, classy premium looking design and pro level features.

Great review that does not just fawn over the fact that a pro app is included. This is not and A7s and Sony need to learn that was it's target market bloggers and enthusiasts needs is function, great IS, great lenses and a camera front and rear that just work. Not features on paper.
