You Will NEVER Finish Your Backlog of Games.

Video Game Backlogs have gotten out of control. Back in the day, we used to get one game every few months. Now with sales on the Playstation Store, the Nintendo Switch e-shop, Steam, Epic Games, Game Pass etc., we have access to more games than ever in history. But that's created a problem: we'll never have the time to actually play most of these games.

Perhaps this’ll be one of the reasons to campaign for that 4-Day work week people are clamoring for.

Just play games you genuinely enjoy and don’t feel bad about missing out on the games everyone says you need to play. It’s sweet there’s a ton of options out there, but like you said, life’s too short to not just play what you enjoy and save the rest of your time investing in your life and those around you.

hardest part for me personally isn't so much the staggering amount of games but not subconsciously rushing through the game because i have so many others i want to play or beat. miss the days when i was just completely immersed and i didn't care if i was replaying the game for the tenth time or taking my time looking around every corner of every dungeon. feels like a constant cloud over my head with all the titles out.

I believe with the amount of media coming out nowadays it’s impossible not to have a backlog.

In my case I don’t have a backlog for music, but I do have a small backlog for movies, a larger one for books and a much larger one for games.

The longer one thing takes to complete the less I get to cover before new things come out that keep catching my interest.

I always finish my newest game before buying another. There's nothing to miss out on in single-player games, so there's no rush, plus the next game on the list might have dropped in price by the time I buy it.

The main problem is that we can always "finish them anytime" and as such, we procrastinate and get caught up with the next new shiny games.

And this is why humans should strive to evolve into immortal beings - so we can finish our backlogs of video games.

I'd say your backlog problem isn't as bad as you might think. Most people don't finish the games they start, and in reality most of the games on your backlog you probably won't like so you'll drop them quickly. To finish your backlog you're probably looking at a year and a half not 3 years

Are you completely right? Yes, absolutely. Am I still gonna buy games that I will barely play at all? Yes, absolutely.

I feel like you bring up some interesting points up about the backlog, but one thing that has helped me is to not think about the games I want to get. I don't think about the time I need to sink into playing them until after I purchase them. Until then, it's something I'd like to buy if I have spare cash, get a bonus, or maybe ask for as a gift. Another thing I like to do is switch between long and short games. After a finishing a big game or two, I then go to a short game I have on my backlog to give me that satisfied feeling of finishing another game soon after finishing a bigger time sink you don't feel like it's going to be another long commitment. I hope that helps trim your backlog. :D

I don't need this kind of negativity in my life.

I got similar experiences from back then. However people tend to forget that video games are methods to relax and tbf, a waste of time. The answer in yes, it is impossible to finish all the games you wanted. You don't have to play all the games and more things are better in life other than just playing video games. With that said, what I usually did is I just play whatever games I want, usually a blind playthrough. It usually took me around months to finish a JRPG, longest spanning 5 months. Also if a game doesn't interest me within the first 3-5 hours, then I probably would not like the game and I would probably drop it.

The best thing is to enjoy the game, have fun instead of rushing to platinum everything.

So many languages in the world but my man chose to speak FACTS……and not just games…i feel same problem with starting a new TV series as well……too many options and fear of missing out kicks in. Great video bro.

This is why I like how my brain works. I went through all my consoles and emulators and made a list of every game I actually WANTED to play. Not every game I own. Just the ones I actually want to play. I then made a self rule that I wouldn't buy or download any new games that I haven't played before until I clear my current backlog.

Once you impose rules like that on yourself; it's easy to look at new games and think if you really want to play them. I had 52 games that released in 2023 that I wanted, but once I waited for myself to f8nish the backlog, when I got around to actually going to buy and play those 53, recency bias had already worn off and I was left with 12 games that I still really wanted to play.

12. Out of 53. Recency bias and FOMO are why people's backlogs get so big. Because they grab the new games the second they come out and don't finish them. Waiting forces your brain to recalibrate itself and you'll realize you don't actually want to play those games; they just looked fun at the time.

Sometimes I miss the times when you were limited in what you could buy and your game choices were so personal and individual, no matter how many people owned the same gaming system, you always ended up having your unique game library and they had their unique collections. So you would not end uphaving hundreds of games, but only so many. And you were finishing them all since the value for money was a thing. A real thing. Today you get discounts, low sales, bundles. I ended up with 352 games in about two and a half years. I never even played half of them or maybe just teased myself a bit into them as I played the initial two or four hours before jumping on to the next. Monetary limitations awkwardly lead to better choices and a fuller gaming experience overall.

Great video!! Every since I’ve been getting games (either buying them or getting them for Christmas), I’ve been barely playing most of them because I’ve been having a busy life, mostly outside of my house. I remember getting some 3ds or wii u games back in 2015-2016 and I’ve barely touched them because I was focusing on something else. The only time I wanted to finish a game is from a title that I’ve been waiting since it was still in development or if I’m bored and have nothing to do. After seeing this video, now I really should continue playing games I haven’t touched in so long.

Tips for getting through your backlog. (That worked for me!)
#1 tip is Play 1 game at a time.
Don't worry about the whole list. Compile 3-5 games in 2-3 different genres to switch up monotony. Pick 1 and have your 2nd already chosen before beating the 1st, going back and forth in genres. That way, you're not worried/overwhelmed when having to see the huge list to choose from again and switch things up to reduce boredom.
*Using this method, I've beaten 5 games in the last month!

It’s especially difficult nowadays if you have any multiplayer games you like since everything has become this live service product that demands absurd amounts of your time. I’m a sucker for Destiny 2 and Rainbow Six Siege which alone is difficult to balance playtime between the two let alone with other games, hobbies, and daily life as well

To be honest, I help my analysis paralysis by trying to look at a backlog as a “let me try or sample the game”, instead of a completion list. You’ll eventually stick to some and just enjoy the process.

I do have a backlog but I randomly close my eyes pick a game and just enjoy my time. There used to be a time when I used to think about playing every game but now I just enjoy my time with whatever game I choose and usually don't think about the rest unless it's a game I've been waiting for some time (usually 2-3 games a year).
