That "bad sound" you initially got when you played the .mid file was actually something called "General MIDI". Essentially, it's a pre-defined list of default instruments that comes with your computer's operating system. It was created before computers had enough power to process sound and images at the same time, so external hardware (in the form of a box called a "MIDI Sound Module") had to be used that could just play back .mid files. This was often used in old video games as a better sounding alternative to whatever grating beeps the computer could manage on its own (a sound we now affectionately call "Chiptune").Those .mid files are, as you know, pretty much functionally identical to sheet music. Today, General MIDI is used partially for backwards compatibility's sake, and partially as a crude preview so that you don't need a DAW just to hear what notes are in a .mid file.

Oh dang, new Crafsman dropped on Thanksgiving? Nice. Sorry if this brings the mood down but I just wanted to say thank you so much Crafsman for all the videos over the years and beyond. My father passed away a couple of days ago so this is my first holiday without him. And a new video from you always seem to brighten my day. Thank you Crafsman. Much love.

My daughters are in town for Thanksgiving. This channel is our jam. My oldest daughter is 10 and she walks around singing “Don’t forget to wear your dust mask.” 😆 We were surprised to see a new video drop today and so excited to be together to see it!

Zero music ability but loaded Reaper after your other video and realized just how talented musicians are. Including you. Thank you for making this.

This episode made me think that Crafsman, and Look Mum No Computer would have a field day making music.

1:56-1:59 - That sequence takes me right back to being a kid from 78’ to 82’. Glorious.

We had that exact Casio keyboard from the thumbnail when I was a kid. I remember being convinced that the LCD frame was a micro cassette door and prying at it. :)

I have watched a dozen or so videos in the past few weeks trying to understand MIDI. This was not only the best explanation, but far and away the best demonstration. Hmmm...Maybe those two things are related...

MIDI is SO powerful these days. You can score an entire movie if you're ambitious enough. Limitless possibilities! Just as long as one has fun doing it. :)

Been using Audacity since I was like 12 so round about 15 years and I've been wanting to move on to Reaper but was intimidated. This makes me feel like I can figure it out with a little less trouble than I anticipated. Thank you.

Oh man, the Crafsman is sending me down another rabbit hole. There's always something new and interesting to learn!

Dang, I found this super inspiring and helpful. I want to make musical sounds too, but sometimes I become overwhelmed by it all. I like how you break down the information in honest bits. I don't go to school anymore but I want to find a way to keep learning and be somebody. Thank you, CrafsMan.

The makers of Reaper today are like "Why the sudden uptick in downloads?"

"Ooh! That line was funny. I'm gonna remember that and quote it in my comment!"

"Ooh! That line was funny too. I'm gonna remember that and quote it in my comment! Wait, what was the first one again?"

*End of the episode*

"Jurass-tic Park! Haha!! ... wait a minute. What did I want to quote again?"
