Lyoto Machida Shotokan Karate background has given him a few different throws, trips and sweeps that he has incorporated into his mixed martial arts game very fluidly. In this video, we take a look at a brief history of Machida Karate and then some of his most familiar Shotokan karate style takedowns that he has used both in a karate competition and in the MMA arena.

One point I’d like to add about his foot sweeps from the clinch, while it is certainly possible and in fact likely that he developed and “pressure tested” those techniques in Sumo Wrestling, these are also found in karate itself. In particular, the kata called Tekki Shodan or Naihanchi Shodan, depending on style, is very heavily based on clinch fighting using sweeps, leg kicks, elbows, knees, hook punches, arm locks, etc. That kata is currently my personal favorite and when you see the applications demonstrated by someone who knows what they’re doing, it makes a lot of sense.

These are often used in point sparring, so amazing to see them put to use in cage fighting

I didn't know about Lyoto's Karate background. Thank you for this.

Your video makes me think of Hayward Nishioka, the legendary judoka that was also a karate champion, with foot sweeps a large part of his arsenal. In one of his instructionals, he has a special section dedicated to karate footsweeps.

I think you have to a attribute a lot of Machida's takedown game to his background as an amateur sumo champion. Which you do, to be fair. But I think it is understated a bit by many. Apparently Inoki was quite an influence on his wrestling game, as he said that was why he mostly outwrestled his opponent in his first MMA fight. He said that he then realized that he wanted to represent his karate background when he fought and began to employ that more so. Awesome, educational video. Great job.

Like everything else, there are pros and cons. I did Karate when I was already a black belt in both Hapkido and Taekwondo and made it up to brown belt. I still choose not to use the 50/50 stances they taught me because in sparring days, I usually toyed with their black belts because the 50/50 made it easier to sweep than having weight on rear leg. 50/50 made it very easy for me to sweep them because half of their weight was already on lead leg so all I had to do was kick ankle with 80% or more of my weight and they are trained to back up with both legs which was never fast enough for them to avoid the sweeps.

The pros probably outweighed the con though because of all the Martial Arts, I have taken; Karate seemed to go the most in depth about the elements of actual hand to hand fighting. Others like Taekwondo focused more on techniques whereas on Karate, we focused a lot more on timing, efficiency of movements etc. pretty cool stuff actually.

It's funny, I have my 1st Dan Black Belt in traditional Okinawan Shōrin-ryū Shōrinkan karate which I started in 6th grade and did weekly until I was 18, and I knew it was technically from my karate background originally, but I always thought that the step in outside trip Lyoto does around 0:29 was just the simplest/easiest way to trip someone, but I guess I don't really see it that often.

Throughout my school life I was bullied. They mocked me because of my dark skin. And they use to beat me up. No one helped me. I made friends with some of my classmates thinking that they will help me. But when the bullies came they left me and joined the bullies  to beat me up with them.
Then I started learning karate. And I worked day and night to train myself. And then all my bullies avoided any conflict with me.
Now I'm a black belt in karate and I know how it feels to be weak. But the truth is we are not weak its just a state to mind. So I thought of teaching everyone martial arts and rise above bullies. And started a YouTube channel last week. Always remember YOU ARE NOT WEAK. YOU ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOURSELF TO BE. NEVER EVER GIVE UP.
