Sarah Huckabee Sanders' Speech Only Made Biden Look Better

Biden seemed to be putting on a performance with his State of the Union address. He seized the opportunity the Republicans gave him when they heckled him and he painted them in a corner on Social Security and Medicare. He took what they gave him and used it against them. And the official Republican response didn't even try to appeal to a wide audience and instead focused on right-wing culture war issues and grievances. The difference between the two speeches was stark.

We mentioned how you know the response to the State of the Union. I think the era where we had this era where Republicans like at the Tea Party Like Sarah Huckabee Sanders types would come out, they would try and deliver their speech to the American public writ large and it would destroy their careers. right? because remember Bobby Jindal. they all come out and they try and do this. and it wasn't just that Marco Rubio was doing you know drinking the water and this and that. it was like they were talking to a broader audience. and it's very difficult to talk to both audiences simultaneously. Sarah Huckabee Sanders saved her career in my estimation by not even attempting to talk to the entire country. she's talking only to the right-wing there. and Biden you wrote about this I felt the same way that night I think Emma did too that State of the Union Address and all my problems I have with Biden was in some respects astonishingly. I mean he got them to put on record publicly commit to not touching Social Security and Medicare. which they're all the yelling that they did basically just made sure that it was in the news for like four or five days. In every poll you've ever looked at that talks about who you trust more in Social Security and Medicare it says, Democrats. I mean it was crazy what he did in that speech. and you know he ignored a lot of things that he should have talked about but you know I don't take that speech seriously as anything other than like a brief performance. but it could actually have material implications for politics going forward. It absolutely could and you know as you say it's a performance. and this was one of the few times maybe the only time that I've ever seen a president actually kind of use it as a performer. yes. he understood that this inner that that he's there and I don't know if it's instinctive or if he thought it through it doesn't really matter. that you know they knew that I'm sure they were aware of the possibility that this freak show was going to act out. I mean you know, of course, they were. they didn't know exactly when or over what issues.

I loved the part where Huckabee says ( with a straight face) that the choice is between normal and crazy.... As If She represented the "Normal" side...

Aunt Lydia’s dystopian rebuttal was comically awful. She became a fear merchant and talked about culture war issues and attacked Biden personally. Everything that she spoke of wasn’t even close to what Biden was saying. He was optimistic and she was painting some hellscape that I’ve never experienced. Who thought it was a good idea for her to do the rebuttal?

That speech was a work of art.
I would expect that speech to be studied in political science classes nationwide.

She’s absolutely right that they’ll bring up repealing Social Security again sooner rather than later which is why Democrats need to lean into this hard right now.

If I were Biden, I would have waited until Greene started screaming and said "for those of you playing at home, " looks at watch, "anyone who had MTG outburst at 47 minutes, you won the pot".

I never thought I’d live to see the day the GOPers would jeer at the prospect of cutting social security 😂. Gotta hand it to Biden. Well played.

her State is at the bottom of every meaningful metric, of course the GOP would pick her to give the response

"When your born you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front row seat."

There really should be a Gallagher splash zone or Sledge-o-Matic tie in joke follow up to that IMHO.

After Biden got them to go on record about not going after SS and Medicaid, he could’ve just dropped the mic and walked out.
Ol’ “slow Joe” manipulated their tiny minds 😂

Digby + Sam having this longterm respectful friendship is so heartwarming, I always get warm fuzzies when she's on with Sam --- obv she's a savvy interesting plugged-in commentator, so she's always a welcome presence, but their relationship always makes me think of my longterm platonic dude-friend/colleague...it's hard to articulate but I appreciate it so much.

I really respect Digby. She writes like a dream, she thinks like a Socratic genius and she speaks in dulcet tones with great consideration and great acuity. Just so enjoyable. Thanks for this, Sam - my second favourite. .Greetings from Scotland.

The thing with Biden is. Most of the time he knows politics, and knows how to do deals and compromises, and bending the truth. Sometimes dealing with people he really doesn't like. And support bills that he doesn't agree with in exchange for other things. But he also often has moments where he just speaks straight. No Bull**it. No filter. Just blurts it out. Something a lot of his followers find appealing. Because moments like that is where you know he has qualities of a frustrated every day man just wanting to get stuff done.

Tax the rich. It’s more humane than guillotines. But billionaires need to be made aware that those are the two options.
