33 minutes? Did one of the writers escape? 😛

This was a journey to write! Knowing it ended with Bass getting locked up helped, but like Simon said at the end, learning that the family suffered so much more was really heartbreaking. Anyway, I hope everybody enjoys (still deciding if that’s the right word for this topic), even if it’s a break from the 2-3 hour videos we’ve been getting lately!

9/11 was the day I reminded my high school social studies teacher that radios exist. He was fussing with the tv which didn't work before sitting down looking depressed. He thanked me as he pulled out the radio so we could hear the news. I also convinced the rich kids to let kids with relatives in New York and Washington DC use their phones by pointing out that they are unlikely to get punished as they definitely could afford the bill. Then a couple kids pulled out their phones and let the few kids that were totally freaking out make the calls that thankfully proved their relatives were okay. I definitely couldn't forget that day.

Simon's serious "I'm a huge bakery person" at 15:43 had me in stitches.

The point of a statute of limitations isn't so that people don't have crimes hanging over them their entire lives. It's because, with the passage of time, evidence becomes stale or degenerates, memories fade, witnesses become unreachable or pass away, and a fair trial becomes next to impossible. And that's true no matter how horrific the crime.

I grew up in Acme and it's such a relief this guy is behind bars. Rest in peace Mandy

As a mortician, yes, you do get desensitised to an extent, sadly. Still it hits you hard hard some days, but you get over it fast because you have a job to do.

Officially replacing "murder" with "murururuduh" in my personal vocabulary. Thanks, Simon!

This episode was short, but not in a bad way. It felt very to the point, and I enjoyed all the quotes. It’s tragic it took 30 years for justice, but I’m glad in the end justice was served.

I grew up and studied police science in Whatcom County. We were overjoyed that they finally found him. I know some of the detectives were absolutely haunted by Mandy for the full decades it took to find him. The policework on this case was truly exemplary. Ron is the absolute best man ever. And yes, super small towns like Acme can survive, mostly off the people who live in the surrounding county.

Never heard of this case! A much shorter episode…which of the writers escaped the basement?? Thank you Simon, Harrison, and Jose for another video!

Great video all. Lived nearby in Everett, and never heard this story. Used to travel 9 all the time to avoid 5.

Funny thing about bakeries though. Went to a small bakery in the area with my daughter. The lady behind the counter was in her late 70's and very nice.

She saw my last name on my card and asked if I had relatives back East. I said yes, I was from there. After some chatting, it turns out when she was a girl in the early 50's her dad was a baker on a Marine base on the East coast. He had a good friend who became a good family friend with my name. It was my Grandfather.

Small world.

I got an ad right when the father gets quoted around 8:45. The father recalled whispering about old spice body spray. Unintentionally hilarious.

As a former American Public School student born weeks after 9/11: they made damn sure we knew all about it. I had a teacher who got emotional discussing it each year. It may have been 20+ years ago, but when they sai “9/11, never forget” they truly mean NEVER forget

*Justice Montoya-Lewis. She might have been a judge at the time, but she’s been a state Supreme Court justice here in WA for a while now. She made history for being the first Native American woman on the state Supreme Court here 😊

Wow that opening was FIRE!
Or more poetically put; The elegance, eloquence, and verbal elasticity that you used to draw in the listener, while simultaneously honoring a seeming 30 years of pain, uncertainty, and finally communal relief, was nothing less that entrancing.
Let’s go writer ! And Simon for Voiceover work!
Okay,
Im ready to watch more than 90 seconds of this now :)
Thanks!

We don't get used to what we see, but develop ways to not viscerally react outwardly. To let the impact on our souls influence our duties is to not be able to do right by the victims. We most assuredly absorb and hold secret within ourselves the absurdities we witness. The scenes haunt us quietly and we do not burden our families with the ugliness. Here's to police, detectives, CSI, fornsic examiners, trauma nurses and docs, paramedics and the list goes on.

So movies really only depict Cheerleaders as the "happy sexy morale boosters" for football players. Compeditive cheer is INSANE Gymnastic and Actrobact team performances. my cousin did it for years before hurting her ankle killed her career. (so she decided to become a Biochemist instead and got a degree from a very prestigious school and I'm INSANLY proud of her.) and she coaches now for some local community stuff.

Hey, Simon! Hope you, family, and friends are all okay. Heard about the tragedy in Prague, and while I know saying your entire country is in my prayers is pretty meaningless to you, please let us all know if there’s any place we can donate to help victims or their families. I don’t have much in terms I can give in financial support, but times like these is when you really need to take action and every dollar put forward can make a difference.

Just in December, Simon has given us videos on the Menendez brothers, Jim Jones, the Zodiac Killer and Aileen Wuornos.

I may not celebrate Christmas, but I’ve definitely gotten enough presents
