Hecate is one of the most mysterious characters of Greek mythology, who embodied the terrors of darkness. She was likely the daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria and was typically depicted in Greek art holding torches. Due to this fact, and the mystery around her in general, she was either considered a Titan herself or a minor goddess, but in either case she was a fascinating, important and extremely powerful witch. Hecate practiced what the ancient Greeks called pharmaka, which was the use of herbs and plants to create potions. Hecate was believed to have discovered a number of poisonous plants and potions that she would use on the tip of javelins and spears, which made them far more deadly. Hecate would also test these poisons and potions on strangers she came across by feeding them poisoned food and watch how they reacted. Hecate was best known for guiding the goddess Demeter (with those aforementioned torches) as the goddess searched for her kidnapped daughter, Persephone. It was Hecate who heard Persephone cry out, though she didn't immediately know who had taken her. Once Persephone was located living in the Under world with Hades, Hecate became her companion in the world of the dead. The witch goddess was said to spend her time at crossroads or tombs and was often accompanied by a polecat and a dog, who was originally a woman named Hecuba, the queen of Troy. Hecuba refused to go as a slave with the Greeks after the fall of Troy, instead, she jumped into the sea and was transformed into a dog. In her role as an infernal goddess alongside Persephone, Hecate often spent her time wandering with the souls of the dead, from which her presence was announced by the ominous howling of dogs. Like a number of other goddesses of Greek mythology (Hestia for example), Hecate was incredibly important in the Greek world, however, there are very few recorded stories about her.
