2023 Tesla Model Y RWD Review | Does Tesla’s cheapest electric SUV bring more value and efficiency?

It might look like a blobified Tesla Model 3 sedan, but the frumpy design of the new Tesla Model Y hides a very competent, efficient and versatile mid-size electric SUV that’s proving hugely popular with Aussie buyers.

We couldn’t quite match the entry-level RWD version’s claimed 455km range, which also falls short of some other similarly-sized battery-powered SUVs priced around $70,000.

But there’s plenty else to like about Tesla’s most affordable SUV, as Feann Torr discovered after living with the Model Y’s integrated vehicle systems, autonomous driving functions and its performance on crummy Australian roads.

It's becoming a no brainer to get an EV over a petrol car in the same price range. Combined with solar i paid nothing all year to power both the car and house. Then when you decide to get an EV a Tesla is the clear winner.

I must say, after sitting in a Tesla looking straight ahead with a side way glance to the speed and back again, your peripheral vision still sees the road, which is how our eyes are designed. On my digital display in my car, the speed is at the bottom directly in front, which means when I look down briefly, my eyes are completely diverted off the road. So I think all the fuss is not actually there…maybe just me.

A good review but no mention of the Voice Command feature that negates the use of the touch screen for many of the common controls. Accessed by pressing the right scroll wheel then say the command. A few examples below:
Make it Cooler
Make it Warmer
Cool down the passenger
Direct air flow to my face
Direct airflow away from my face
Turn on the drivers seat heater
Turn on Windshield Wipers
Turn off Windshield Wipers
Speed up the wipers
Slow down the wipers
Turn on Dog mode
Fold the mirrors
Open the glove box
Drive to the airport
Lets go home
What resturants are nearby
Open youtube
Open netflix
Turn on radio
Open the Frunk
Open the Trunk
Close the Trunk
Open the charge port
Turn on the Dome Lights
Turn the Fan to 9
Take me to the nearest Supercharger
Turn on my seat warmer

I guess the model Y you tested was not latest 2023 models. The suspensions have been upgraded and are more comfortable.

Thanks for this video on the Model Y RWD. It is Aug 2023.
I just got the 2023 Model Y long range vehicle because I wanted the AWD hatchback for winter time here is Northern Illinois. Plus it has a little longer range to it with the bigger battery. As long as I charge to 90 percent at home, this battery should do pretty well.

I am retired and just drive around town or short trips, so battery range is not an issue. I really like all the features of the Model Y and my 2023 vehicle has the HW4 and newer cameras. Also like the single pedal driving and regen braking of the Model Y. I did not get the EAP or FSD driving modes. The basic Auto Pilot/Cruise control are adequate for me.

The Model Y should work out very well for me and I enjoy driving it. Take care.

The best part of this review was you confirming to me what I've been wondering... whether a skateboard fits in the frunk. That's the feature that sold me

Hey does this 23 model not have new suspension?

One thing to note is because the LFP battery is smaller, the slower DC charging speed is enough to charge the car at the same % as the bigger, faster charging lithium ion batteries. Also the LFP is less demanding - charge it to 100% or not. Should stay healthy longer

Wow I’ve had my MY for over 6 months and I only just realised the middle headrest extends. Thanks.

Can you give me a link to the Australian Model Y long range 2 motor 🤔

Interior fit and finish is surprisingly good….can you quantify that please…do you mean for a Tesla or for a $70k car

The lack of a driver display, a few essential buttons, and perforated seating is infuriating at the price point. I'd have one tomorrow if they fixed those issues. As it is I think I'll go the BYD - slower charging, though 90% of my charging will be overnight anyways.

Maybe mention that in Australia we don't get the LR

The sound system is the best I've heard at any price. Did you mention that this is the safest car / SUV in the world?

Is it more comfortable than a model 3?

Question: can the size of the font showing the current speed be made much larger? The lack of heads-up-display or something large and central to the driver showing current speed is a stupid omission by Tesla. Many other YouTube reviewers mentioned this about Model Y and Model 3.

What people never think of when comparing driving an EV is noise that we never hear in conventional cars due to engine noise, with a silent engine you hear everything else.

Elon did a dirty and just dropped around 10K off the RWD Model Y to 61K. I was looking at BYD Atto Extended range but now looks like I'll have to get the Tesla instead.

Hope Tesla include Active driving display in future model instead of having to take eyes off the road to look at the centre monitor for the speed the car is going.
