ASA Knots Made Easy : Rolling Hitch

This valuable hitch can be used to tie a line to the standing part of another line or to a spar. It's especially useful when you need to transfer the load from one line to another - remember that winch override? It's similar to the clove hitch but with an extra turn on the side that's in the direction the load will be applied.

And now see how *correctly* Rolling Hitch fits (from the 12:37 timing):

No matter how many times I try this, and your link to the navy training video, mine still ends up being able to act as a slip knot of sorts. Should it?

I hesitate to say anything because I’m no knot expert, but I think this is a taught line hitch. It serves a similar function but tied differently. With a taught line hitch (as shown here) the wraps are made inside the working end (toward the direction of pull) and then you cross back OVER the working end to finish the knot. With a properly tied rolling hitch, the wraps are made over the working end (away from the direction of pull) and then you cross UNDER the working end to finish with a half hitch. I’m wide open to correction on this and would welcome comments so I can learn if I am wrong.
