"So few have got any benefit at all, yet all suffer from the backlash." A lesson we should learn in our country.

Without hyperbole, Thomas Sowell is one of the finest men the United States ever produced.

As a proud Indian who hails from the lower classes who has now risen above to the middle class - reservations DID NOT work for us at all. It caused a very quick rise in an elite section among the depressed classes & lowered the actual standards of students of the depressed classes.

The best thing that should have been done was special coaching or special schools to help raise the depressed class students to the same standard & then compete on merit with PRIDE.

PRIDE is so important when you hail from lower sections of the society & that Pride must be earned via MERIT - not free doles.

People from the West can literally see the mistakes so many Asian countries have made and learn from it. It just baffles my mind how people from the west actually want to do the same things we want gone from our society.
"Reservation" is something most Indians are fed up of, yet now Americans want it for their own country? So weird.

The real problem with reservation system in India, is that the People among the Untouchables who have received the benefits and have gotten rich since a generation, their children are going to receive the benefits and they will beat those Untouchables who are still poor, and there is no restriction on economic status of the untouchable family receiving benefits.
All in all, it has created this elite class of Untouchables among the Untouchables who are rich and can afford luxury and get reservation as well.

This is beyond true. Fir instance there is community called 'meena' in North Western part of India. They are deemed as a tribal community. But they take big chunk of quotas reserved for tribal communities. And they are much more prosperous than any other tribal community. Funny thing is they are seldom considered untouchables and have had dominant position in society and politics.

We had riots at the B.H.U. Varanasi every year. The untouchables could pass exams with only 40% marks whereas caste kids needed 70% marks to pass, so they protested and clashed with the police leading to the campus shutting down for weeks on end.

Thank you sir for acknowledging this.
I am from India and I got 750 score in GMAT and couldn’t get into medium tier college in India all because 50% of seats are reserved for quotas (scheduled tribes, scheduled caste and other backward classes)

Thank you for providing great insights upon this topic.

Only an foreign experts could have said this openly. Experts in India are so politically sensitive about this issue that they never say the full truth

This is the reason I follow this channel. They finally hit on the nail.

As an Indian, it makes me sad that an economist from the United States has a better understanding of reservations than our own politicians.

British Chief of 1921 India census: “We pigeon-holed everyone & if we could not find a caste for them, labelled them with hereditary occupation. We deplore the caste system & its effect on social and economic problems, but we are largely responsible for the system we deplore.”

Well many Buddhist nations had a proper caste system like, for example upper caste South Koreans of Nobi caste didn't allow people of Baekjeong or Cheonmin caste to enter the cities but, instead of giving freebies or reservations the government of South Korea decided to industrialize the nation and improve the country's infrastructure. They were as rich as India in terms of per capita income in 1960s and now they are 20X richer and guess what? The caste system doesn't exist anymore.
India opted for social development instead of economic development, not realizing that social development is a byproduct of economic development, because money fixes all the problems.
I have made a video explaining the Buddhist Caste System, i would really appreciate if you give that a view.

Indian reservation system was the vision of Dr. Ambedkar. It's goal was to create more equality amongst all Indians, in reality it created more inequality among unequals.

It's good for the USA, because all the brilliant Indian kids who perceive a lack of future in India, due to the Reservation policy move to Western countries and in most cases comprise the highest earning ethnic groups in these countries. The number of people giving up Indian citizenship has risen to a record high of around 1.5 million people/year in 2022.

In India, affirmative action doesn't provide for 3%. It is now 50% and, in some regions and institutions affirmative action is as much as 80%.

True. I had this topic in an exam. It was a debate. I made a girl cry 🤣🤣🤣. She knew she was losing the debate and started crying to gain sympathy. Nobody fall for it.

One wishes that India had courageous intellectuals like Sowell to speak the real truth about how miserably the Reservation policy has failed in the country and contrary to expectations, created a "backlash."
