Eastern Counties (a NATIONAL bus company) 1980

My childhood memories are of the unique white rubber window surrounds on the older ECW busses! Vivid early memories of that so I will have been on many similar vehicles in Yorkshire! Good to see a few Lodekas too! Golden age of National Buses! I always loved Bristols with the Gardner engines! Can’t believe I’m only finding these posts now! Well - better late than never! 😊

My old Dad worked for eastern counties for 33 years, retired in 1985. I wonder how many of these buses shown here crossed his path! He would agree, they were definitely the 'good old days'. Remember going in yo Surrey street depot as a child, they like one big happy family, and I was always welcomed, well the depot has gone and so has Dad, nice to see the old buses though. Good times.

Eastern Counties was a well respected local employer and public servant. It saddens me that this is all lost to the avarice and capriciousness of the free market which now serves only itself. Bus privatisation has been an unmitigated disaster.

I wonder what joint services Eastern Counties ran with other bordering NBC's? Almost certainly with the other Eastern, Eastern National, the other Counties, United Counties (not to be confused with the other United far to the north!) and Lincolnshire Road Car are my guesses.

It always seemed to be a rule at NBC to never quite get the number or destination blinds exactly lined up.

Why do a lot of the single deckers have extra ground clearance cut out of the lower fronts/corners, was there a particular route that necessitated this?

I've lost count of the number of times that our local Eastern Counties buses in Cromer appeared to go to that mythical of all towns: SERVICE!

I wonder why provinces didn’t have a dedicated font even under NBC like London Transport has. The blinds always looked tatty
