Driving to Last Castle (Viklari) and Avakas Gorge

A couple of days ago we published an article showing the route to Avakas Gorge and Last Castle. At the time, the restaurant was closed, so we concentrated more on Avakas Gorge. Since then, it has opened. This film shows the route to get there. If you are considering driving it, you should check it is covered on your car insurance, as the part from the church to the coast is bumpy.
When you get to the bottom and reach the car park past the bridge, there is a ROAD CLOSED sign. Well, there was when we visited anyway. You can still drive up that road to get to the Last Castle, and it is less bumpy than the track down from the church. However, if there is a construction crew there when you visit, they may not appreciate you driving through their building site. Common sense should prevail here.
Personally, if I had a rental car and wanted to visit the restaurant, I would turn right at the junction after the church, and park somewhere down there. From there you can follow the track down on foot and up the other side of the gorge to the restaurant easily.
All the above is posted for information only. If you damage your car on the route, that is your responsibility.
One final point. When we were there there were a lot of bangs going off.Initially (it was just after Easter) I assumed it was kids letting off the last of their fireworks. However, they went off at a regular interval, so I now think they are most likely crow scarers set by the local farmer.

We continue past Lasa and Kannaviou, before taking in the delights of Panagia. Getting a bit more adventurous, we visit the abandoned villages of Statos and Agios Fotios, before passing through Choulou, Letymbou and Polemi, and rejoining the main Paphos - Polis road.

Explore traditional villages, visit a shipwreck and some ancient sea caves, and have a swim or a paddle in some of the lovely beaches. And once you have done it, do it again in reverse, to finish it off with some spectacular sunsets.
