Michael Fremer at AXPONA 2024

Michael Fremer is the editor of The Tracking Angle and senior editor of The Absolute Sound. Michael never fails to entertain, provoke and raise eyeballs with his avid advocacy for vinyl and his highly opinionated takes on all things audio.

Listen for his takes on old people in the audio industry, young people taking over vinyl, technology improvements in all things audio, distortion, state-of-the-art headphones, how to listen, why he got a headshot, how his father broke a Modern Jazz Quartet record over his head, how he opened for The Jam, Television and Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band, and how he appeared on MTV with Peter Gabriel and Neil Young and Dave Mustaine. His advice for people in their 20's: "Whatever you're doing now, make sure it's important."

Michael is my mentor! Anybody that says he's snobbish doesn't know him. I told him three years ago at a show that I had a Technics SL-B2 (now replaced with a P6) and I hadn't even used it yet out of fear, he asked me several questions and then spent time with me with pointers I'll never forget. The next couple shows I saw him at, he remembered me and spent time with me. I appreciate him.

Love Michael and all that he's done for music, especially vinyl - related issues.

"It doesn't matter whether it's a digital recording..." and "All recordings are fake..." and "There's a thing about a record..." ! Priceless! 😆

Too many people are obsessed with the technical. LISTEN to the MUSIC. and how it makes you feel. No scientific instrument can measure that.

We need more people like Mr Fremmer not less. Id like to know how many of these snipes say that negative stuff to his face. So much jealousy over what; that someone has more knowledge than they. If you listen to him you learn something which is unique. If I could ask him a question it would be how he handled all the “weird” in Hollywood. I wasn’t able to when I had my shot.

You are a legend in your own mind, and Steve Guttenberg even said so.

Kudos to Michael for getting hall-jacked by some random interviewer and generously giving 20 minutes.

I love that Michael knows who Dave Mustaine is 😊

The only thing that could kill vinyl is the crappy pressing plants like GZ and a bunch of others with a greed driven business model, who think they can just keep pumping out junk to a market that will continue to absorb their crap and never go away, but they bite the hand that feeds them and the record buying public are getting smarter and won't continue to tolerate it. If spotify go hi-rez, vinyl will revert to a boutique, niche interest.

I heard that 💿 CDs are coming back also. Is that true?

With the cost of Vinyl going sky high I’m sure it will have an affect on sales, instead of buying 2-3 albums at a time, it’s hard to afford 1

I was there, and mostly what I saw, as far as the attendees were concerned, was white, male, and old... like all the other shows. Some younger guys were working the show for sure, but almost no women. Technology is improving in loudspeakers, class D amps, headphones etc. But the high end always was and still is heavily based on nostalgia, stuck in the past on things like passive loudspeakers, vacuum tubes, and vinyl. All fun, but certainly not advancing the performance quality in any way.
