Internationally acclaimed and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Leigh portrays one of the bloodiest episodes in British history, the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819, where government-backed cavalry charged into a peaceful crowd of 60,000 that gathered in Manchester, England to demand democratic reform.

It's good time for this. Most people have forgotten the Chartists, and Peterloo, and the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

A story that actually needs telling for once

It's fascinating how "touchy" the establishment are when the media drifts from the official narrative. Officially, British history is all about Kings & Queens and men of power the story of Peterloo breaks with that. Suddenly, working class people are thinking for themselves. But if you think the story Peterloo was problematic then the outrage will be as nothing when the Irish Famine film Black 47 hits the screen.

Saw this film on Sunday. Its really good and sadly timely. One of the most depressing aspects about it, is even thought these events happened nearly 200 years ago, the themes of this film still resonate till this day, poor people being disregarded, maltreated and denied the freedom of democratic expression. Today its universal credit, Brexit.. the demise of the Labour party as working class platform and force for change.. the savagery of homelessness.. industrial scale unemployment.. the Elite & Middle Class disrespect of working people...zero hour contracts.. the squeeze on wages.. all live issues affecting the poor of today.

British Raj did the same thing in India on 13th April 1919.... Jallianwala Bagh Massacre...Almost 1000 deaths including children..and approx 1100 non-fatal injuries...It was a peaceful assembly too...

I love everything about this movie! I even went to see it in the cinema a second on my own (yes, I looked like a loner but I didn't care). This trailer, which intersperses Shelley's words, honestly gives me goosebumps. Such a horrible event.

Just watched the dvd of this, it's a truly fantastic political drama.
Not something one enjoys, but something that is important to watch. This story must be told, and told well.
This does just that

It only took 200 years to get an official memorial for this on the site it happened. TWO... HUNDRED... YEARS...

For those interested, it's located outside of Manchester Central (the old station, many know it as G-MEX).

My ancestors were, very likely, at St Peter's Field that day. The more interesting aspect to me is the way that it shaped everything around me when I grew up in Stockport. Every day I passed a statue of Cobden, the prime mover in repealing the Corn Laws. The man who first formulated international trade treaties that are still the cornerstone of WTO rules. I understand why he was honoured by the community. It puts in context my father's own deep rooted sense of duty owed to those around him which he expressed as a dedicated teacher and methodist lay preacher. That said, suffrage was fiercely resisted throughout the 19th Century and I can just remember the hideous slums that were homes to the mill workers for 150 years after Peterloo. Some casual research revealed that the Cheshire Yeomanry, by all accounts a drunken ill-disciplined rabble who initiated the violence on the crowd, had been formed by a close friend of the Prince Regent.

The fact that Amazon distributed this tells you how subversive modern capitalism is. That's what you're up against.

A strange feeling arises after viewing comments.
Proletarians of all countries - unite! We have nothing to share in this vast world. We must and can cooperate for the benefit of all mankind, without division into whites and blacks, without division into religions, without sexism and chauvinism. We are a productive, self-organizing force, we are proletarians.
