What is Privacy? | Privacy 101: E01

Oh, what’s that? You want us to poorly summarise the plot of The Circle (2013) to promote the first episode of our Privacy 101 series? Sure thing! We can totally poorly summarise the plot of The Circle (2013) to explain why we need privacy and why privacy =/= secrecy. We thought you’d never ask!

Big tech: OK, so here’s my next gazillion-dollar idea. We all walk around with cameras that record our every move. Why? Because we’re being transparent, jeez.

Oh, you don’t want to do that? Pfft. Privacy-schmivacy. Privacy is only for evil people who are concocting nefarious plots to bring about the downfall of society. If you want privacy, you clearly have something to hide.

Yeah, that’s pretty much it. (we never promised a good summary)
But even our bad one covers the critical bit: if transparency is good, is privacy bad? And if we have nothing to hide, why do we need privacy in the first place?

The first episode of our Privacy 101 series (bet you never saw that coming) addresses these fundamental questions and debunks some common arguments against privacy.

The short version: privacy isn’t just a legal concept or even a fundamental right (though it is very much also both of those things), privacy is a recognition of our selfhood and autonomy. It allows us to live our lives as we choose and is inalienably linked to our freedom.
But as you know, summaries aren’t exactly our thing, so happy watching :)
