In this video, discover the best way to learn the whole fretboard of the guitar.

Visualising and memorizing the fretboard can be a challenge for many, however, there are effective methods and strategies that make it a whole lot easier.

In this lesson, I sit down with Guitar Playing Breakthrough Specialist Tom Hess to discuss and demonstrate the best way to learn the fretboard.

Many of these approaches do not require you to have a guitar in your hand. A lot of what is addressed in this video can be practised away from the guitar.

You learn:

- How to visualise and memorize chord shapes, arpeggios and scales on guitar
- The one thing that makes a huge difference to the success you have with learning the fretboard
- How to memorize and visualise the fretboard while falling asleep each night

Plus a whole lot more!

This is such a good idea. I actually already do it for song lyrics, I can only learn them away from the guitar and the song, running through them in my head til they stick, then I can sing them. It had never occurred to me to do the same for the guitar. I tried this last night but started simple, just all the notes on the E strings. And it seemed to stick I grabbed the guitar this morning and knew all the notes. 😳 The other stuff in the video went above my head, but I grasped the concept of learning away from the guitar by visualising the fretboard. Thank you this was so useful. 😀

Thank you. Creative visualisation is used a great deal in sport and other activities and it works. It does seem that the more "real" you can make the visualisation the more effective it becomes. For guitar I guess that means that you need to feel the strings and notes. It takes time to learn how to do this because its all in our minds. We all did it as an aeroplane, driving a steam train, being a rock star....but as we grow up life tends to knock this out of us. The good news is that this is buried deep within us and you can release it and use it
There is a book, The Inner Game of Music, well worth reading if you can get hold of a copy, I don't know if its still in print

Interesting idea. This is something that I started doing a few months ago. Now you guys verified what I stumbled upon awhile ago on my own.
