New 2022 Ineos Grenadier - Off Road SUV Interior & Exterior

This is the Ineos Grenadier, and as much as it looks like the original Defender, the retro-styled SUV you see here is in fact built by up and coming UK-brand Ineos Automotive.

Built from the ground up on an all-new platform, the INEOS Grenadier has been designed on purpose: namely to meet the demands of its future owners for a rugged, capable and comfortable go-anywhere working vehicle.

“The brief was simple. We set out to design a modern, functional and highly capable 4x4 vehicle with utility at its core”, said Toby Ecuyer, Head of Design. “A design that is ‘easy-to-read’, with no ambiguity about the Grenadier’s role in life. There to do everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Nothing is for show. Modern engineering and production techniques ensure the Grenadier is highly capable, but we have been able to stay true to the essence of creating a utilitarian vehicle that will stand the test of time”.

Ineos Automotive has unveiled the interior design and initial specifications for the Grenadier off-roader, with the utility vehicle focusing on a rugged approach that mixes practicality and durability with the latest technology and plenty of comfort, the company claims.

Almost every element of the Grenadier has been designed from a clean sheet of paper, including the cabin. With the car’s focus on being easy to operate in the most extreme conditions (e.g. when wearing gloves) - as both a commercial vehicle and a lifestyle off-roader - the Grenadier’s cabin features big buttons and controls that have been inspired by maritime set-ups and heavy machinery, according to Ineos Automotive’s Head of Design, Toby Ecuyer.

The interior of the all-new spiritual successor for the previous-generation Land Rover Defender was inspired by aircraft, boats and even agricultural vehicles like tractors, bucking the trend of clean, minimalist cabin designs that shun buttons in favour of large infotainment screens.

Instead, the centre console and even the roof panel above the gear lever are littered with toggle switches and dials that are spaced and designed to be operated by drivers wearing thick gloves in artic conditions.

It's the same for the large 12.3-inch touch-screen infotainment system, which has a supplementary rotary dial on the centre console to ensure you don't need to de-glove to plug in your destination or engage diffs.

The 4×4 Grenadier will boast a two-speed transfer case, front and rear solid axles and coil-sprung suspension, a galvanized steel chassis, approximately 750 pounds of rooftop static load capacity and a near-class-leading towing capacity of 7,000 pounds.

Ineos’ engine choice is the BMW B57/B58 family, so each Grenadier will have a modular 3.0-litre petrol or diesel straight-six that sends its drive through a ZF-supplied 8-speed automatic gearbox (and a separate low-range transfer case). Depending on spec, these engines make anything from 265hp to nearly 405hp in their BMW applications.

Production of the vehicle will launch in late 2021 at a former Daimler plant that builds Smart cars in Hambach, in northeastern France. Ineos acquired the factory from the German automaker last year.
