When criminals like Bonny and Clyde ran amok robbing gas stations, banks, and grocery stores, the FBI coined a term to describe the new kind of criminal they were dealing with: Public Enemies. But only one man earned the title of Public Enemy No.1: John Dillinger, bank robber extraordinaire.

Dillinger could’ve been a leading man in films. In that footage he seems to have a cool charisma.

Please do more public enemies, like Pretty boy Floyd, Baby face Nelson, Alvin Karpis, and the barkers. Their lives are as colorful as their nicknames.

Fun fact: Mr Dillinger's sister dated my great grandpa and the family still says that when John was running he'd camp on our family farm and they would tell my grandma that "just ignore that car that just Mr Dillinger sleeping one off" never believed it till I researched Dillinger in highschool and found records of him doing it

I was expecting more information about the shootout at Little Bohemia Lodge.... the FBI mistook a car that was leaving for Dillinger's car and shot several innocent people. The commotion allowed him and his accomplices to escape.

Humbly requesting George Carlin. A comedian and satirist who oftentimes hit the nail more than just on the head; and whose bits were infinitely more than just satire. The guy was a comedian, satirist, begrudged philosopher, and even the *narrative* voice of the Thomas the Train, (AKA Thomas the Tank Engine) tv show.

Was super stoked to see this video. I'm related to Elizabeth Fields. My family still owns new papers from when John was shot.
Love you stuff Simon. Been a long time listener for a while now. Can never get enough.

My great uncle recently did one of those DNA test things to figure out where most of our family hailed from. Turns out, John Dillinger is my 4th cousin and now that I think about it, my grandfather (my moms dad) looks just like John. Like, if you put pictures of them next to each other you'd swear they were twins or at the very least very closely related. This blew us all away. Then we found out that our family actively tried to make his memory forgotten in our family. Which, I can see why they wanted to do that. Nobody really wants to be known as the relative of public enemy number 1. That would make it pretty hard to find a decent paying job. Thanks for sharing!

I work right down the street from where The First National Bank of East Chicago used to be. It was torn down in 2005 and replaced by a Walgreens. That Walgreens closed about 3 years ago and has been vacant since. A historical building was demolished for nothing... so sad

Great summary, makes me want to re-read Public Enemies. The thing I can never get over is how after a big score in the Midwest or Plains areas, those guys would high tail it cross country in early model cars with no amenities, no highway system, no motels/drive thrus/convenience stores...just travel cross country bit by bit. Makes me appreciate the luxuries we have today.

I was just studying up on the Dust Bowl, and saw a reference to him. Quite a nice video to find.

The old John Dillinger Museum in Indiana ABSOLUTELY scarred and fascinated me as a child. The bloody clothes he died in were neatly displayed on a chair and I can still see it decades later.

My great-grandfather was a few blocks away at the time Dillinger was shot. Him and his cousin ran over there. They worked selling newspapers as kids. His cousin started collecting the blood on the ground and shouted “Souvenirs 25 cents!”
