Bionic Eyes-Gene therapy + Optogenetics for Vision Restoration- Dr Sheila Nirenberg : Bionic Sight

Sheila Nirenberg, PhD, is a pioneering neuroscientist and professor at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where she serves as the Nanette Laitman Professor in Neurology and Neuroscience. With a PhD from Harvard University, Dr. Nirenberg has dedicated her career to unraveling the complexities of visual processing and developing innovative solutions for restoring sight to those affected by blindness.
Dr. Nirenberg's groundbreaking work centers on understanding how the brain encodes visual information. She has made significant strides in developing a novel approach to treat blindness caused by retinal diseases, such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa
Instead of attempting to replace damaged photoreceptor cells—a method often invasive and limited in efficacy, she has created a Non-invasive strategy that bypasses these cells entirely. Her invention, a computerized eyeglass prosthetic, directly interacts with ganglion cells in the retina, transmitting neural codes that the brain can interpret.
This innovative device has shown promising results in early clinical trials, with patients able to detect light and motion after receiving optogenetic gene therapy. The ongoing research aims to further refine this technology and secure FDA approval for broader use.
In addition to her work on vision restoration, Dr. Nirenberg is applying her discoveries in neural coding to advance machine vision algorithms and brain-machine interfaces.
