The Economist-article mentioned has a lot of crazy stats: "For every life that the heaviest 1% of SUVs and trucks save, there are more than a dozen lives lost in other vehicles" is crazy

And make sure we all have headlights that blind everyone else driving at night

Only in America do SUV drivers call bicycle owners “elitist”

As Jeremy Clarkson once said "SUVs are like nuclear weapons. Once one person has one, everyone must get one."

Exponentially more dangerous while logarithmically more safe. About as inefficient of a trade off as you can get.

I heard "big car safe" 20 years ago when I was visiting Alabama. And I immediately realized what the conservation of momentum meant for the other car.

The sheer number of americans acting like pedestrians don't have the right of way, it's on the driving test and the written renewal for drivers licenses, at crossings is UNHINGED.

Y'all the big trucks are a problem, but the hundreds of people self reporting that they shouldn't even be allowed to drive, bc they can't obey existing rules for that luxury and convenient ton of metal, is definitely a problem.

Who knew making consumer grade tanks with bumpers taller than most school children would end up being a bad idea

I’m 6’1”, the amount of trucks and SUVs in my community that are raised and up to my chest is astounding. You can barely see the top of my wife’s head let alone my kids

Also, a small car in pedestrian accidents have a higher chance of the pedestrian surviving, since most hits will most likely be below or at waist height. Bigger cars greatly reduce pedestrians surviving in accidents

Lets be real, like 80% of those who own SUV or "Light Truck" never haul anything, nor ride it for off road

And please observe that the blue line (the big-car-safe-line) flattens after roughly 4000lbs. Beyond that size, the drivers safety does not increase with car-szie.

Remember back when they were pushing for us to buy big cars for safety. I was a kid, and I thought, "It's safe for the inside, but what about the people outside?" And then we had the whole Firestone tire scandal, which I was convinced would end SUVs, because I thought all SUVs were Ford Explorers.

"If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die historic on the Fury Road!", I scream at a cowering family in a midrange SUV that's about to be crushed beneath my wheels - honored to have done my part for US driving culture before I'm asphyxiated by a seventeen-year-old boy's truck rolling coal directly into my windpipe.

This is the American Dream I immigrated to this proud nation for.

Not to mention, big car doesn't fit. The number of times I tried to park in a busy lot and can't fit my compact car because a giant truck that is way bigger than it needs to be is parked inches away from every other car around it

On a different note, the actual reason why everyone is driving massive vehicles now is because of the United States federal government. In the early 80s they instasted the CAFE standards ( corporate average fuel economy) which placed a cap on the fuel economy of a car companies entire line up BY WEIGHT. So instead of manufacturing more fuel efficient vehicles, the auto makers just make them bigger, so that they are allowed to be less fuel efficient. As well as most cars aren't actually cars, but mpvs or light trucks, (check your titles) because light trucks are allowed to be less fuel efficient. In short BRING BACK MY LITTLE SINGLE CAB S10 CHEVY!

Ya, my MIL and SIL were hit by a medium size car while crossing the street. They survived with my 11yo SIL having minor injuries and my MIL having to heal and relearn how to walk. My MIL was stuck on bed rest and in extreme pain for months. Im extremely thankful it wasn't a big car, because they likely wouldn't have survived. My SIL had minor injures because she flung onto the hood and hit the windshield, this helped decrease the amount of force her body absorbed. My MIL had such bad injuries because she was flung into the road, so she absorbed a lot of force. This has made me hate big trucks so much more. They are literally chest height.

A year after the accident, I was on our main street with my SIL. We were crossing the street with the walk signal and a big ass truck decided to not stop until he was IN the crosswalk. The only reason he didnt hit us was that I was being extremely diligent about watching the empty right turning lane, I saw the roof of his big ass truck coming up behind and around another car and stopped my SIL. In the half second we were stopped his car sped into the exact spot we would have been in if I hadnt stopped us. I had been holding onto her while crossing due to her reasonable fear of crossing the street. When he saw is he realized he almost hit us. My SIL was literally about to cry. I was scared to try to finish crossing the street because i didnt trust him, I stared at him the entire time we crossed in front of him. I hope I made him feel shame, I definitely mouthed horrible things at him.
