Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party has narrowly won Canada's election, but has failed to secure a majority.

It’s Mr Trudeau's third federal election win, but his critics say the poll was a waste of time.

The Liberals are projected to win 156 seats, short of the 170 seats needed for the majority he was seeking with his early election call.

The Conservatives have held onto their main opposition status and are expected to win about 122 seats.

That election didn't seem to accomplish much, It cost $610, 000, 000 of taxpayers' money to put the same basic minority gov't configuration back in Ottawa. Probably the most positive thing was getting rid of the Liberal incumbent Maryam Monsef of the Peterborough ON riding after she referred to the Taliban as "our brothers". That was an international embarrassment from what was shown to be an ineffective MP. Good for Peterborough for ousting her from office and hopefully politics.

For all of you folks in other countries with different types of governments, here is a really quick and rushed explanation of why Trudeau wanted a majority, and how it works

When elections in Parliament take place, the party who wins the most seats in parliament gets the ability to establish the new government and elect the new Prime Minister, who is usually the leader of the party who won the election, in this case, it’s Justin Trudeau. Who’s party (The Liberals) just won their third election in a row.

In order for the Prime Minister and his government to pass legislation and laws, a majority of parliament most vote in favor of it.

The Parliament has a total of 338 total members.
170 are needed for a majority (almost half of parliament), and those 170 members of parliament must vote in favor of most laws or legislations that the Prime Minister and his government propose in order for it to be approved and take effect.

The problem with Trudeau’s government is, that they didn’t win enough seats last election to get an outright majority. Instead, they are a minority government, which means they won the most seats out of all other 4 parties, but still didn’t win half of all seats, effectively becoming the “largest minority”

So because of that, since their party won the most seats out of the other 4 parties, they get to keep their Prime Minister. But because they didn’t win the 170 majority of parliament needed to pass legislation, that means that they will need to depend on members of other parties to vote in favor of their proposals in order to approve their laws and edicts. Which means that they can’t pass legislation on their own without the support of the opposition parties.

Logically, this creates a problems since it makes it nearly impossible for any new laws to pass since it’s very unlikely that any of the opposition parties will help the current party.

That results in what is called a “hung parliament” which practically means nothing gets through.

So that’s why Justin Trudeau called this new election. He was hoping to win an outright majority (half of parliament) in order for his party to be able to pass laws and legislation on their own without needing to depend on the vote of the other opposite parties to get things done.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get his desired majority. Instead, he won the most seats out of all other parties again, but once more fell short of reaching half of parliament, resulting in another “largest minority”, and insuring that once more he can’t pass anything on his own without the other party’s votes.

Currently, the new parliament results are:

158 seats held by Liberals (Justin Trudeau’s party)
119 Held by the Conservatives
34 Held by the Bloc Québécois
24 by the New Democrats
2 by the Green Party

So as you can see, liberals are still the biggest group with 158 seats, hence why they get to keep Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister, but they don’t reach the half of all total seats majority (170) needed to pass legislation, meaning that they still need at least 12 members of other parties to vote alongside them in parliament in order to reach the 170 votes to pass anything, making it very unlikely that any of the other parties, being the opposition, will help them. Effectively resulting in another “hung parliament” were almost nothing gets done.

I hope I did a sufficient job of explaining it. Sorry for repeating a lot.

What should I do with this 600 million dollars, should I help feed our increasing homeless, help feed our poor seniors, help our struggling single mothers to buy cloths, help our struggling war vets, help clean the drinking water on reserves, help get this opioid crises under control, help protect our boarders, help hire more nurses, help create jobs or buy more beds for our shelters, NO….I think, will call an election in a pandemic and put more people at risk. Pathetic, I am disgusted with this country.
