Sonos Connect (Sonos Port Equivalent) your Vinyl Turntable

The Sonos Connect has now been replaced by the Sonos Port. Whilst the Port brings some new functionality (ie AirPlay 2) and an updated DAC, for the purpose of this demonstration it is the same process as the Connect.

Love Sonos? Love Vinyl? Want a cross platform digital analogue multi-room funk fest?

Of course you do! You're human. Here's how to do it:

1. The standard system is: Turntable - Phono Preamp - Amp - Speakers
2. To stream your vinyl: Turntable - Phono Preamp - Sonos Connect Line In - Amp - Speakers.

To play on the local system you need to first select the Sonos on the Amp input selector. Then you will need to use the Sonos App to select line in. The turntable will not automatically push through the Sonos to the amp.

So if you're an audiophile you're not going to like this as you're putting a great big dirty piece of technology between your amp and your vinyl, but then again if you're wanting to stream your vinyl then you won't be too fussed and you're likely to have a separate turntable system for your "serious" listening.

To listen to the turntable on another Sonos device, simply select that "Room" on the Sonos App and then choose "line in"

Enjoy!

Very informative, thanks. One more scenario that no one on YouTube has covered yet is if the Connect will work with powered speakers and if they will have perfect sync with the other Sonos systems. The reason I ask is because I want to use my (better) existing subwoofer rather than coughing up an additional [gulp] US $700 for a mediocre Sonos product.

Great video! I have pretty much done the same setup, however when I group the Connect(TT+Preamp out to amp) to the play1's I lose all sound from the connect. Play 1's are fine. Wonder if you have any thoughts?

Hi Ted - thanks for putting this up. Question: is a pre amp required to be able to play music from your turntable to the sonos system? As of now, I only have a turntable, sonos connect amp, and sonos playbar. I'm not having luck getting music through, unfortunately. Thanks!

Nice video! If you’re playing your vinyl through sonos do you lose that analog quality? Or does the sonos connect transmit analog signal? I have a bunch of sonos speakers throughout my first floor. Are my sonos speakers high enough quality to even bother with vinyl?

Hi thanks for the vid. So basically a question about it. i have a sonos beam on center and 2 play 1 on the sides. It is interesting to make a connection for my turntable and put only his sound on the sonos (not i other speakers). If you make like your case the sound goes on prephono-amp-connect and finish on the passive speakers. But in sonos speaker case? It is the same so prephono-connect-amp-connect to the sonos? Or just prephono-connect-speaker sonos? Thankyou

I was thinking of buying that turntable because it’s small size and I hear it’s a great table but I also heard it’s really finicky. How do you find it? Does it need a lot of attention?

Ted - is there a way to run the turntable into the receiver and then run the receiver into the sonos connect? Similar question to "can I play the turntable into sonos without a preamp". I guess I'm asking, can the receiver function as the preamp?

Awesome video. One question. Is the signal going through the Connect to your receiver still analog? Your setup is exactly like I would want mine to be, but I want to set it up so I don't loose quality when just playing the turnable with the analog system. Now I know that you said that "you don't have to choose between the modern streaming option and anolog sound", so I guess that confirms my question, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks again!

Hi Ted, great video and thanks for demonstrating the delay. One question: is there a lag between the different speakers? In other words, does your Play 5 lag behind the stereo setup because Sonos has to send the audio over to it? Say I had several Sonos speakers in a room, would they all play the turntable sound in sync (like regular music streaming) or would there be a lag from one to the others because of the heavier/richer nature of the audio? Thank you I appreciate the response. I would like to get a Play 5 to connect to my turntable (via line in) and have the sound play on my other Sonos speakers in sync.

Thanks for the video, nice work explaining! Quick question. My receiver that I use is a vintage Yamaha (CR-1020) and has a phono input, so I don’t require a preamp. Now when adding in the Sonos, I understand needed a preamp before connecting my classic Yamaha turntable (yp-d6: no built in amplification) into the Sonos. Now on the line out of the Sonos, I now assume that I should NOT plug into the phono input on my classic receiver, as it would over amplify the sound(pre amp going into Sonos and amp phono amp of the receiver), and just use the aux input. Is that a correct? Also, I assume if this is the case, I will lose some of the beautiful qualities that comes from playing music through the phono amp of the cr-1020. I’m not a massive audiophile but I do like to warm authentic tones from my current system - just looking for a way to also add in a wireless option to pipe the music to the rest of my place. Thanks for the help!!

Thank you! But what if I want all my input devices (cd and phono) on Play5? Could I use line out on my amp (skip the phono pre amp) and then into the connect?
