The legendary Chelsea Hotel, an icon of 1960s counterculture and a haven for famous artists and intellectuals including Patti Smith, Janis Joplin and the superstars of Warhol's Factory, is under renovation. Soon it will reopen to the public as one of New York's most fashionable luxury hotels. Dozens of people, most in their later years, still live amidst the scaffolding and constant construction. Against this chaotic backdrop, the film takes us through the hotel’s storied halls, exploring its living body and the bohemian origins that contributed to its mythical stature. Its residents—casualties of capitalism—and the walls themselves now face a turning point in their common history.

There are numerous "Chelsea Hotels" (or Hotel Chelseas, properly) everywhere, now and in the past. Communal hotel or apartment residency experiences that link those who live in them during crucial formative parts of their youth and young adulthood, and become a rosy part of their future memories as adults. Some infamous, like Hotel Chelsea, or Hotel La Louisiane (in Paris), but most others completely and happily unknown. My apartment building in a pre-gentrified area of Seattle was one such. To all of us who were there, we were all famous to each other.

Review: in a single word: Funerary. Sad and ephemeral and lacking historical information for the uninitiated using survivors of the building renovation to evoke a sense of loss and incompleteness without explaining even minimal reasons why. Thanks for confusing and alienating the neophytes and scrambling critical history, mr Scorcese.. I did expect much more and the Chelsea story deserves much more. 2 of 5 stars
