It’s been several years since the launch of the A110 and now – finally – Alpine has got around to producing another car. It’s called the A290 and it’s an all-electric hot hatchback. Can it carry the legacy of the A110 into the EV world? CAR magazine’s James Dennison finds out.

What's your favourite hot-hatchback?

45, 000€ ? For this, it is not surprising that the European auto industry is collapsing

I respect the fact it doesnt have cupholders. Now it just needs an engine.

I'm glad Alpine is coming to the States in 3 years. I hope the a290 comes over. I'm so tired of seeing massive vehicles on the road with way to much power.

This is an ideal second car that I would lease if those were sold in the US. Interior is nice, looks are good, range and performance are adequate.

Proper practical autoroute range at 130 km/h, 110 miles. Talk of a game changer

I can't be the only person to struggle with the range claim. Over 200 miles with a 52 kWhr battery ?
Surely in real world conditions that's not very likely.

I love it and as I've been caught speeding I really don't want loads of power. The cameras these days are so good at looking far away, you tickle the throttle in modern day cars and you're 10 over. I don't actually want more power in this. I love it. Although the AWD version will be spicy.

Should be lighter, cheaper, and more powerful.

James another great video your reviews are just awesome to watch, like the job that Alpine did with the A290 but still, I'm waiting for Hyundai to make an EV I20N replacement :)

No cupholders makes this worth considering. Having seen one, it is nicely made.

The performance is luke warm rather than hot hatch It is rather heavy.

This is clearly for City/suburban use, (same goes for all lectrics) for anything else, a range extender engine is needed. When does the range extender version come out?

I wish they would re-engineer the bmw i3. That showed how to weight save.

Totally agree, actually better not to have cupholder, and a gear selector in the right place.

Nissan leaf+ is 215hp / 60kwhr from 4 years ago? Used £12k-I know it’s not fancy but does the job- was expecting more from Alpine hot hatch 280hp?? Tech washing ??

imho it's the best looking car there is on the market right now (under 70\80k) but 45 for this is nonsense

what is missing is a proper engine :(
Proud of brake pedal feel!!! wow!! Amazing ....
In the past we would concentrate on driving performance etc...now more tiem si spend on explaining the various displays.

The last great hot hatch was the Clio 182. Front drive, big motor, 2 doors, big smile.

Several things:
1, why switch from in video narration in person to narrating this from your outside lav?

2, the Hyundai is fast but IT’S NOT A HOT HATCH - way too big, way too heavy.

3, the Renault or whatever it is definitely isn’t a hot hatch, again too heavy, not enough power, way too tall.

But, other than points 1 to 3 good video.
