The VCU Medical Center is one of the busiest centers in the country when it comes to implanting the CardioWest Total Artificial Heart deviec. With the addition of the Freedom Driver portable pump, some TAH patients are able to leave the hospital and wait at home for a donor heart to become available. This poses new challenges for emergency medical services personnel should they need to respond to one of these patients. This video is part of a comprehensive training effort to educate first-responders to the unique needs of this patient population.
