Jimmy’s Greatest Regret - 6x13 ‘Saul Gone’ Analysis - Better Call Saul

Episode 6x13 of Better Call Saul was named ‘Saul Gone’ and was the final episode of the series, and likely the final piece of media from the Breaking Bad universe. We begin the episode right from where we left off in 6x12, with Saul fleeing Marion’s house. He retrieves his diamonds and gets ready to call the disappearer once more. With nowhere to go he jumps into a dumpster. A likely call back to 1x08 ‘RICO’, where Jimmy is searching for the shredded Sandpiper documents in a dumpster. We could reasonably call this the first major plot point of the series, in terms of Jimmy’s law career, it seems fitting therefore that he’s now back in one before he gets caught. It’s also somewhat of a visual call back to the first montage of Season 6, with the Saul cut-out being placed into the dumpster outside his house. His being in the dumpster also feels very fitting with his whole La Cucaracha thing, that he’s garnered over the seasons. There’s lot of parallels between past and present in this episode, so, I wanted to look at that today. In this video I thought we’d discuss specifically the flashbacks of Saul Gone.

Today we're going to be breaking down and analysing Better Call Saul Season 6, Episode 13 'Saul Gone'. Let's get into it!

Hope you enjoy!

The Chuck flashback is definitely pre 101, Jimmy mentions a stand that might start carrying the financial times, and in 101 Jimmy brings the financial times to Chuck and says he was able to get it

I think Walt is not being honest about his time travel answer either. Much like Jimmy, walt avoids his emotions. He has a lot of regrets, and I am pretty sure that when Saul asked him about his, he thought of the decision to give Jesse up to the nazis. This is because the camera focuses on the watch that Jesse gifted to him right when Saul asks. Walt regrets what he did to Jesse on some level but is not confronting that feeling.

I 100% called the ending because I knew from the very first season that this show is about a man in denial and the only logical way to resolve his arc would be for him to grow past that
Edit: And the fact that his ice cream is also mint chocolate makes him the most relatable protagonist for me

You're totally misreading Walt's answer. It was revealed in season 5 many times over that it was never about the money to Walt---it was about his ego. About recognition, fame, power. Greymatter was his ticket to do that legitimately as a business owner as opposed to a drug lord---seeing that as a life where he could have had all of the benefits of his current life with none of the downsides.
That includes his megalomania.

The way Walt sees it, if he had been running Greymatter the entire time, he would never have had the crisis of identity, and would have been a fully realized Walter White as opposed to Heisenberg. Because the whole identity of Heisenberg is trying to make up for all those lost years. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get them back. That's his biggest regret.

The ring thing is definitely just a continuity error.

Didn’t realize this but the title “Saul’s gone” is just a play on the words “it’s all gone”. Huh very cheeky

In the end Jimmy proved Chuck wrong, people can change, and Jimmy didn’t hurt everyone in the end. He chose to sacrifice himself to save the woman he loved very much.

Thank you so much for these series of analyzations on this wonderful show. They’ve been a joy to watch, and constantly get me rethinking my own theories regarding the show.

The 86 year sentence is an amazing touch by the writers. 86, in some situations, means nixed or out of or no more or in this case It’Saul Gone.

Solid analysis of Jimmy's "time machine" question. Everyone's like "Oh, Jimmy's all about money" after hearing his answers. When it's obvious he answers as a Saul persona, and doesn't really mean it - hiding his real regrets.

Also impressive how you noted nuances of Walt's answers - haven't seen these points before, and I think I agree with you.

No joke, Adam, just got finished with the show and was looking for some good analysis to sink my teeth in. Opened up this video and started hearing you talk and thought...

Wait a minute....is this the DBD lore guy? Love it!

My interpretation of the Time Machine book was a little different. A huge part of Jimmy's motivation to become a Lawyer was to be more like Chuck. Strongest Evidence of that is in the flashback at HMM where he sees Chuck return from a successful case. One way he could try to be more like Chuck would be to read the same books Chuck reads. In fact after he sees Chuck in the flashback I just mentioned, his first step is to go to the library and read books.

Additionally, the earliest flashback we see (chronologically) is Chuck and Jimmy as children, where Chuck is reading Jimmy a book. While your interpretation, that them having the same book means they both think the same thing about time travel, I think it might mean that Jimmy still, deep down, wants to be like Chuck and feel connected to him.
