The Bear (known as L'Ours in its original release) is a 1988 French film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Adapted from the novel The Grizzly King (1916) by American author James Oliver Curwood, the screenplay was written by Gérard Brach. Set in late 19th-century British Columbia, Canada, the film tells the story of an orphaned bear cub who befriends an adult male grizzly as hunters pursue them through the wild. Several of the themes explored in the story include orphanhood, peril and protection, and mercy toward and on the behalf of a reformed hunter. Annaud and Brach began planning the story and production in 1981, although filming did not begin until six years later, due to the director's commitment to another project. The Bear was filmed almost entirely in the Italian and Austrian areas of the Dolomites, with live animals—including Bart the Bear, a trained 9-foot tall Kodiak—present on location. Notable for its almost complete lack of dialogue and its minimal score, the film was nominated for and won numerous international film awards.

Bart the bear 🐻 God bless you you showed everyone that if you look at the heart and soul no matter if they are animal or human there is so much more then what we see with just our eyes

This is one of the most Amazing and Exciting films ever made.  I can't get our cats to even attack a bird in the neighbor's yard where there's a bird feeder attracting 100's so I can film it.  Can you imagine what kind of training, patience, and artistry it took to fulfill this vision?  I saw this at the Village 6 in Norman, OK with my friend's hippie parents right before we all went to Zion National Park in Utah in 1988.  That last scene is more poetic than anything Scorsese, Welles, Renoir, or Ozu has ever attempted.  Never said this before, but...BRAVO!!!

Watched this in theaters when it came out. This was my favorite segment of the film, although I was prepared for it to be a tragic ending, it tranformed into an act of defiance and unity. They did an excellent job with this film.

I really need to watch a behind the scenes for this.  The planning for such a capture must have been immense.  Simply amazing.

Free will
(Fabio Barucci)

No matter where you left off
At what time you got tired
Discard the advice
Do everything your way
Give it a try yourself
And not wait for the helping hand
Believe you can
Is the only way out…
Fly high, want high, dream high…
Do everything your way
If the soul that will
That explodes in your chest
Go for it
Run the risk
And do not expect a helping hand

Do everything your way!
And not wait for the helping hand
Believe you can
Is the only way out.

why in the end no matter the color, condition or explanation.
The conduct of a life is the treasure it takes!
And not to tie or cassock, protect.

The "momma bear" is actually the Alaskan Kodiak Bart the Bear who died in May 2000.

Clear distress of bear at being dropped in the fast-moving waters (breaking branch my -ss).  Must have been so much fun for the bear to fight strong currents, struggle to make it to shore.  Don't tell me about safety precautions from the filming crew, I'm sure there were some since they wouldn't want to lose their previous cast. However the poor bear cub does not know about that. He is really swimming for this life.  What fun!  Amazing that humans enjoy watching something like this.  Evolution can't come soon enough.

This feels fake, especially with all the sound effects.

I read that the sad thing is that the animals are domesticated and play as actors in a movie should do.

What are the chances... that they had 41 camera's in the right place to make this film about nature? What are the chances... that the branch broke on queue? Outstanding luck. Lastly, why does the little bear sound like a human when he/she runs?
