What Makes The Ford Barra So Good?

Ask any Australian what's the best engine for making a ton of power and most likely a Ford Barra will be mentioned most of the time. It is relatively unknown to the outside world, but Australians and New Zealanders know it very well. Its engineers knew it was going to outperform any competitor. What makes it such a beast?

Great synopsis! They're a sweet engine straight from the factory, but little appreciated (and little understood) elsewhere in the world. Historically, Europe liked their small cars with 4-cylinder engines for their narrow, twisty roads and high fuel prices..Americans preferred their V8s because of their cheap fuel prices and long, straight highways...and Australians had long distances to cover on poor roads, so needed something more efficient than a V8, but more robust and torquey than a 4-pot. And so we stuck with the venerable inline 6 as the best compromise.

My dad pulled 1, 430, 000km out of his Barra before the piston rings started to leak. A hone, some new rings and bearings and some basic maintenance has now made it my little brothers car. Now it spends its days travelling farm to farm so my brother can sheer sheep all over the outback.

More crankshaft bearing area, and a natural balance are attributes of a straight six. Hence the use of the configuration for heavy duty Diesel engines. I've always liked my straight sixes.

Barras are awesome, with a tune it will make close too 500hp with stock parts and the LPG block shares the same internal parts as the XR6T making it very cost effective here (valve springs and head studs and oiling gear mods as you said will get 700hp without pushing it to hard and will last years like that with the right tune )

The first time I found out about this engine was in Gran Turismo 4, because I loved the FPV F6 Typhoon. That car was brilliant.

Buy, buy, buy, before it gets too expensive, as soon as the 2JZ hype starts to dissipate, the price of these engines will skyrocket

Great video! I have only seen a Barra once in my life. Installed in a Ford F100 pickup at a show in Missouri seven or eight years ago. It was a drift monster! Dude was going around a little oval that was there and it sounded soooo good as he drove it sideways around the track a few times.

I have a 195kw (260hp) NA Barra in my car and they just dont die, such a good engine for power and reliability.

A little known fact for non Australians ...The previous Aussie inline six to the Barra was the Intech/VCT SOHC also 3984 cc ...Bottom end nearly exactly the same hence the inherent and legendary strength and reliability ..The Intech is a sweet engine also and was sorted out pretty well by the time the EB Falcon appeared in the early 1990's .. Same bullet proof life expectancy and done right has been known to be capable of well in excess of 1000 hp ..Lots of them around in N/A form . They were mot available from the factory as a turbo..Check them out too ..They'll surprise you also .

I was always a Holden man growing up but I can appreciate the barra so much so that I am on my second falcon now, an FG-X XR6 which is by far the best car I’ve ever owned!

Legendary 6 cylinder engines: the German N/S54/55, the Japanese JZ, RB and finally the Australian Barra

It reminds me that Opel's straight-six engine (NE30C) in Omega or Senator. It is similar engine to Barra, but there are not so many tunners around that engine and not many people even know about that engine.

As a born and bred Victorian, with a Falcon Ute (the BEST car I've ever owned. It will never be for sale) in the car port... This episode brings a tear to my eye.

For some reasons of pride, and some reasons of sorrow.

A little error, the XR6 Sprint (last model made) made a base 436HP and 574NM, but has an overboost function that temporarily incrases output to 496HP and 650NM of torque if conditions permit. I guess the sprint name has some merit lol.

Visio Ive watched your growth since the very beginning, your English has improved dramatically over the years so has the content. Probably the best channel for engine geeks.

I have a XB and a EB2 both with six, great engines. Years ago my father had a Fairlaine 500 with a six, he pulled loaded 40 ton trucks with in Belgium. My grandfather had a Customline from 1951 with six, it did more than 250.000 km without problems.

Love seeing you cover this uniquely AUS/NZ engine! I run one for the few Alpina B5s in NZ and have (virtually) no fear of the XR8 Fords and HSV Holdens that are common here. Have learnt the hard way to treat Barra powered XR6 Fords with a bit more caution though!!! There have been some really cool Aussie Fords over the years - a real shame there won't be more going forward.

OMG, you did one my request. I have one of these engines in my car too. Done over half a millions kilometres and still going well.

I have seen your videos mention these engines once or twice but I never thought I would see a dedicated video on them. Also the barra was found in the last generation of Fairlanes (a luxury version of the falcon) and G6's (the replacement for the fairlane model)

I'm really glad the international car scene is seeing more Australian products positively. Thank you visioracer

This is the engine I’d love for my ‘84 t-top Mustang. I’ve got a 347 stroker with a built tremec T5 to go on it as it’s a project car but I’d trade it for a Barra in a second. I live it the US, I’ve never seen one in person.
