Welcome to a Public Safety Minute with the FSA President. This episode, we are talking about phishing scams. These scams claimed 54 million dollars in 2020, according to the FBI.

Scammers are actively looking to take advantage of the takeout orders you place online. Here are some tips from the Better Business Bureau so that your Sunday family dinner doesn’t turn into a phishing con:

Number 1 -- Only order from websites you know and trust. Scammers can create mock websites that are almost identical to your trusted store or restaurant. Be sure to check that the website URL begins with “https” and look for any misspellings. Performing a quick online search is a good step just to be extra safe.

Number 2 -- On your first order from the website, call the restaurant to confirm they received the online order.

Number 3 -- Use your credit card. You will likely have better success disputing unauthorized charges with your credit card than you would with your debit card or bank.

Number 4 -- Take action. If you are afraid that you ordered from a fraudulent site, don’t panic, take action. Cancel the card you paid with immediately and request a new one.

Thank you for being a part of the Florida Sheriffs Association community. Stay safe.
