Ben Heck's DIY Cell Phone Part 2

Показать описание
Ben and Felix continue building the simple cell phone. Ben dials in the code to parse the data sent by the FONA to the OLED display and Felix solders the necessary components on the homespun, double-sided PCB. Once the PCB is complete, Ben can begin designing a case for the little phone. Using parts he 3D prints and laser cuts, Ben assembles the unit and is ready to re-live a simpler time with his new phone.

Would have loved to see Ben do this but with an old rotary dialer on the front :)

It's a phone with a rectangular shape and rounded edges, look out for Apple lawsuits.

I wish I could have gotten into things like this when I was younger. It's so fascinating.

that thing looks so simple yet so complicated to make.

Don't forget to give it the ability to dial numbers DURING a phone call -- that's super useful for talking to anything automated (like those pay-to-park things where you have to dial in your stall number, etc.).

Ben, you might consider making an old school bag phone. Those of us who travel into the back woods are stuck with the fact that there is often no cell service for today's little wimpy phones. Old school bag phones tended to have massive antennas and transmitters and could get service and save the day.

Can you please explain in details how you made the vias in the double-sided PCB, so that they are flat enough to solder the IC on top of one?

lol the screen was out of place

oh made me forget for a moment, does it do touch tones so you can check your voicemail or navigate other automated systems?

very cool, would be awesome to have more video on the final product and what you might have done better for others following in your footsteps.

Well, the sound quality was kinda poor when Alyson called you. And on the end. :)

I like to see and have the same phone but for hiking as a 911 emergency phone. Must be tough water proff, and possable extendable antenna to improve signal in remote areas. What you think Ben?

Hello Felix,  How did you flash the smd Atmel chip first?  Did you mount it on another board with headers then unsolder?  I'm working to move to smd chips soon so was wondering, thanks.

Ben you should have lazier etched a BCB antenna. There are some good ones out there that may beadle to even work in the shop.

Could you do one using an old salvaged rotary dial instead of a keypad??

i saw on adafruit's video that they have some paper thin antennas. might be an idea for an upgrade.

Hey Ben, I've got a good project. I have this crappy issue with signal around my college. It's generally super weak or simply non existent. Is it possible that you could somehow do a project on a portable router with a huge great antenna to pick up signal? Thanks.
