The United States of America (U.S.A. or USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It consists of 50 states, a federal district, five major unincorporated territories, 326 Indian reservations, and some minor possessions. At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million square kilometers), it is the world's third- or fourth-most extensive country by geographic area. The United States shares significant land borders with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south as well as limited maritime borders with the Bahamas, Cuba, and Russia. With a population of more than 331 million people, it is the third most populous country in the world. The national capital is Washington, D.C., and the most populous city is New York City.

Paleo-Indians migrated from Siberia to the North American mainland at least 12,000 years ago, and European colonization began in the 16th century. The United States emerged from the thirteen British colonies established along the East Coast. Disputes with Great Britain over taxation and political representation led to the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), which established the nation's independence. In the late 18th century, the U.S. began expanding across North America, gradually obtaining new territories, sometimes through war, frequently displacing Native Americans, and admitting new states; by 1848, the United States spanned the continent. Slavery was legal in the southern United States until the second half of the 19th century, when the American Civil War led to its abolition. The Spanish–American War and World War I established the U.S. as a world power, a status confirmed by the outcome of World War II. During the Cold War, the United States fought the Korean War and the Vietnam War but avoided direct military conflict with the Soviet Union. The two superpowers competed in the Space Race, culminating in the 1969 spaceflight that first landed humans on the moon. The Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991 ended the Cold War, leaving the United States as the world's sole superpower.

They don't say goodbye at the end of phone calls in movies and TV because it is wasted dialogue. It does not further the plot or add exposition or character. Yes, we say goodbye in America.

That TV & movie thing of just hanging up the phone drives some of us crazy too. Americans generally speaking do say goodbye or something to that effect. Well, one of my grandmothers didn't, but she was a rather...singular person in many ways. LOL

The thing about not saying goodbye on the phone n TV and movies has more to do with the flow of the story, rather than reality. All Americans that I know use the traditional pleasantries when initiating or ending a call with someone (telemarketers being an exception- I just hang up).

In the movies and TV shows, the pleasantries are usually truncated for time, because they are usually meant to be used as some form of exposition, so it is important to get the story moving along again after an exposition dump.

I’m from the southern US and I rarely if ever actually say bye or good bye at the end of a phone call. Now, I don’t just hang up at the end of the conversation as I do believe that would be extremely rude. I typically end with a “Come see us”, “Talk to you later”, “Alright then”, “Holler”, etc. Just different ways of giving a kind goodbye I suppose.

Not saying, "Bye" in movies and on tv always irks me. Of course, most American say, "Bye". Not sure why they don't in the movies or on tv. I always find it rude. 🧐

Love it! 🥰
The kettle was an electric coffee percolator. It brews and keeps coffee warm. The word you were looking for was “acronym.” 🙂
Another couple of reasons to keep cats indoors are extreme weather and wild animals. In the Chicago area, winter temperatures can dip to -15°C or below, which is too extreme for most cats to deal with. Many wild animals like to prey on or attack cats, including coyotes and cougars. Many people find it it’s just safer to keep their kitties indoors.
We do say goodbye, but usually briefly…unless you’re a teenager talking to your latest love. 😏

Another excellent video from Mr. H! 😍

I gotta keep my cat indoors because not only does she have to look put for cars, but coyotes, and various large birds of prey.
Keeping cats indoors in America is both for the cats safety and the safety of the environment, as they are invasive. Now an established outdoor cat colony is usually what our outdoor cats are, which have assimilated into the environment for generations so it’s fine.

I alwayes say "goodbye " at the end of a phone call, to prevent any misconception that I may have rudly hung up on the person. They don't do it in movies or on TV to save time, it's unneeded dialog.

In college we learned how to take and make business calls. We ALWAYS said a clear and distinct "hello" and "good bye". It has just carried into my every day life.

P.S. I know the Netherlands isn’t a Nordic country. I was just filling in the gap in the data.

I always say bye. My Mother raised me with manner’s. She would have boxed my ears. I’m a southern woman. Polite. My dog loves cats. He was raised by one. He’s 11 and an old man.

LOL There is no snooze button on a cat that wants breakfast... Many of my friends with cats do not let them out to roam. It's not just traffic, but they can be prone to get diseases if they hunt, plus they can become prey, I've known friends who had cats that were attacked by eagles and hawks.

I usually start off my goodbye with "We'll talk later", or "That's all I have", or "Gotta go", then goodbye, else it becomes a string of non-stop goodbyes.

"What was that?"
That, sir, was a 'percolator' coffee pot. What it did was run the water through a pipe in the center to the bubble at the top. When it hit the bubble at the top, the bubble would spread the water out, and let it fall through the ground beans in a basket about 2" below it. Five minutes later, you have a weak coffee. Ten minutes from start to finish, you'd have a moderately strong coffee, and 20 minutes, you'd have a cup of coffee that would keep you up for a day.
It got it's name from the sound of the water hitting that glass bubble on the top.

Indoor cats live on average 10-15 years, while outdoor cats live on average 2-5 years. That is why people in the US keep their beloved pets indoors.

The never saying bye thing, I've only seen that in movies or TV. Everyone I know, especially in the South, says goodbye and all that.

In California especially, cats are coyote snacks. Hence, it’s smart to keep them inside.
